Gill says India got the New Zealand tour in the wrong order. He's right
India's ODI captain wanted his World Cup side for all five ODIs. Because the Tests start soon after, his Test players, Gill included, miss the last two. He also made a sharp case for 6'2" fast bowlers in the middle overs.
A captain with a better itinerary
Captains usually answer scheduling questions with "we play what's in front of us." Shubman Gill, speaking in Auckland on the eve of the first ODI, went further. He said what he'd have done differently, and it's hard to argue with.
India's tour runs T20Is, then ODIs, then Tests. The T20Is are done (India won them 3-2). Five ODIs start at Eden Park today. The first Test is at the Basin Reserve on November 19. That short gap is the problem. India's Test players, Gill among them, will skip the fourth and fifth ODIs to prepare. Jasprit Bumrah is rested for the whole ODI series.
If it had been one-day first, then T20, and then Test, we could have played all five matches, but [we couldn't] because the gap between the one-day and Test matches was very small.Shubman Gill, eve of the first ODI in Auckland, via ESPNcricinfo
Why the order actually matters
This isn't a captain whining about travel. Gill's point is about what each series is for. The ODI World Cup is in October-November 2027, mostly on South Africa's bouncy pitches. The WTC final is in June 2027. New Zealand is the best rehearsal India will get for both before then.
Put the ODIs first and India get five straight games with their full World Cup XI on Eden Park bounce. Instead, they get three. Then the side changes just as the series is getting interesting. Of all the formats, the T20Is could have taken the squeeze. India don't have a T20 World Cup to plan for next year.
A small consolation: the reshuffle gives the fringe players two real auditions. Ishan Kishan has been named vice-captain for the last two ODIs. Cricinfo says that may be a hint about India's World Cup keeping and top-order plans.

The 135kph problem
The more interesting part of the press conference wasn't about the calendar. It was about how to take wickets in overs 11 to 40 on a flat pitch. Gill's answer explains why India keep picking bowlers like Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana and Gurnoor Brar. Prasidh and Rana are both injured and out of this series.
You have to be really on top of your game to be able to score against someone who is 140-plus, who is 6'1", 6'2", 6'3". And there is a lot more risk when you are trying to score freely against that kind of bowler.Shubman Gill, via ESPNcricinfo
A batter's view of bowling
It's a batter's case for a bowling plan, and that's why it's convincing. Gill has done a lot of middle-overs batting. He's saying a 130-135kph seamer on a dead pitch is a free-run bowler, and a tall 140kph bowler isn't. If the ball isn't seaming, bounce is the only thing left that makes batting hard. South Africa in 2027 will offer plenty of bounce.
There's a catch, though. India's two best answers to that brief are Bumrah, who's rested, and the tall quicks who are injured. So at Eden Park, called possibly the second-bounciest square in the world after Perth, India's likely attack is Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Gill has described the bowler he wants. This week, Brar is the only one he has.
The Hardik-shaped hole
Gill also spoke warmly about Hardik Pandya, which says plenty about how much India miss him. Pandya hasn't played since IPL 2026. A shin problem kept him out of India A's 50-over series against Australia A last month.
Gill said few players in the world can bowl with the new ball, in the middle and at the death, and bat as well. That's true. It's also why India's World Cup plan is fragile. A seam-bowling allrounder lets you play the extra tall quick without weakening the batting. Without him, it's Nitish Reddy's job to prove he can bowl 10 overs on a fresh pitch, and this series is his best chance.
The CricIntel verdict
Gill's complaint is fair, and he made it without blaming anyone. The fixture list clashes with his two biggest targets, the World Cup and the WTC final. He picked the WTC side of the trade, rightly. India sit fourth in the WTC table, and after South Africa beat Australia 2-1 Gill called the race "very interesting". Two Tests in New Zealand matter more than ODIs four and five.
So the next three games matter more than usual. Three ODIs with the full batting order, a weakened attack and a lot of bounce: that's India's World Cup rehearsal. Gill, averaging 111.87 this year, will probably do his part. The real test is whether a pace attack without Bumrah, Prasidh and Rana can do what he described.
