Iyer's Hundred Set the Tone — Now West Indies Must Find an Answer at Dhoni's Fortress

The 1st T20I lasted 14.4 overs. Iyer's unbeaten century reduced a 171-run chase to a formality. West Indies need tactical adjustments and a big night from Pooran or Rutherford to avoid falling 2-0 behind in Ranchi.

Lucknow's Verdict — And the Adjustments Required

India's 8-wicket demolition in the 1st T20I was built on Shreyas Iyer's extraordinary 102* off 43 balls and a clinical bowling performance led by Axar Patel (2/26). West Indies posted a competitive 171, with Sherfane Rutherford hitting 56 off 34 and Shai Hope contributing 52, but the chase was over before the 15th over.

For West Indies, the 2nd T20I demands a reset — primarily with the ball. The powerplay discipline was acceptable, but the middle and death overs leaked boundaries once Iyer found his range. Tactical variation — wider lines, more changes of pace, and a willingness to use the short ball against India's aggressive middle order — could make the difference at Ranchi.

India's Likely Approach — Why Change a Winning Formula?

India are unlikely to tinker with a combination that produced a chase in 14.4 overs. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan could open again, with Iyer at three and Tilak Varma providing the left-handed pivot in the middle order. The bowling — Mayank Yadav's express pace, Arshdeep Singh's death-overs yorkers, and spin through the middle — was effective in Lucknow and should translate to Ranchi.

The one question is whether India bring in Ravi Bishnoi's wrist spin alongside or instead of Kuldeep Yadav, particularly if the Ranchi surface offers more grip. But Iyer's instinct is to back the winning combination — and after Lucknow, it is hard to argue with that instinct.

West Indies — Talent Is Not the Problem

West Indies' challenge is not ability — it is execution. Rutherford's 56 showed the destructive power this lineup carries. Hope's form across the tour has been outstanding. Nicholas Pooran remains one of the most dangerous T20I batters in the world. Rovman Powell's six-hitting at Ranchi's altitude could be extraordinary.

The bowling needs the most work. Alzarri Joseph's pace is a weapon, but it needs tactical support — slower balls, wider yorkers, and field placements that adapt to the batter's scoring areas. Akeal Hosein's left-arm spin could be crucial if Ranchi's surface grips. The margin between a competitive total and a dominant one in T20Is is often two or three overs of disciplined bowling — and that is where West Indies fell short in Lucknow.

The Verdict

India are favourites — the form, the home advantage, and the momentum all point their way. But T20 series have a way of flipping on a single performance, and West Indies have the match-winners to produce that performance.
