Third Day, Third Game — Namibia and Rwanda Meet With Tired Legs and a Clearer Picture
By Sunday morning, Namibia Women and Rwanda Women will both have played two games in two days at Entebbe. This one completes their first round of fixtures, and it could say a lot about who is in the race for the Victoria Series title.
The match
Namibia open against the hosts Uganda on Friday and play USA on Saturday. Rwanda start against USA on Friday and face Uganda on Saturday. So by the time they meet, both sides will have played the same two opponents, and the four-team table will start to take shape. The series runs until November 14, so there is time to recover from a bad start, but a win here would put either side in a good position going into the second round.
Namibia's women's programme has been one of the steadiest risers among the associate nations, built on a disciplined bowling attack. Rwanda have grown into a side that can compete with anyone in East Africa, and they know these conditions better than most visiting teams.
Pitch and possible XIs
A 9:30 AM start could give the seamers a little help early on, so the toss might matter, and the side batting first may need to be patient in the first six overs. As the morning goes on, the outfield at Entebbe tends to get quicker, which helps the batting side later on.
Squads have not been published in full, and with a third game in three days, both sides could well rotate their seamers. The XIs are best treated as unknown until the toss, and the way each side changes from Saturday may tell us how they rate their depth.
The verdict
Namibia may have the more settled bowling unit, and that usually counts in a morning game. But Rwanda will be playing in conditions close to home, and after three days in a row, fitness and fielding could matter as much as skill. Namibia might start as slight favourites. If Rwanda's top order gets through the powerplay without losing early wickets, though, this could go right down to the last few overs.
