Pooran and Salt Against Powell and Boult — Two New Franchises, One Very Short Game
Nicholas Pooran has won this tournament twice as a captain. He now leads Royal Desert Champions, one of the five new franchises of the rebuilt Abu Dhabi T10, against Rovman Powell's Emirates Eagles. Both sides have built their batting around Caribbean power. The difference may be in who bowls the hardest ten overs.
Royal Desert Champions — Pooran's new project
Nicholas Pooran led Deccan Gladiators to Abu Dhabi T10 titles in 2022 and 2024, and he knows how to captain in this format: attack early, keep the field up, and trust his hitters. The RDC squad gives him plenty. Phil Salt is among the most destructive powerplay batters in the world, and Sherfane Rutherford and Brandon King add more West Indian muscle. With the ball, Naseem Shah, Maheesh Theekshana, Chris Jordan and Keemo Paul make for a well-balanced attack. UAE opener Muhammad Waseem and Ayan Afzal Khan are among the local players.
Rutherford has been playing in the Nepal Premier League for Sudur Paschim Royals, so his availability for the opening fixture is worth watching. That is common in this part of the calendar, where players move between leagues.
Emirates Eagles — Powell's power, Boult's swing
Rovman Powell leads the Eagles, with Shimron Hetmyer, Alex Hales and Chris Green in the batting and all-round group. Trent Boult with the new ball is the most important bowler on either side: in ten-over cricket, two early wickets can decide a match, and Boult's left-arm swing is built for that. Rehan Ahmed's leg-spin adds a wicket-taking option in the middle, and Indian keeper-batter KS Bharat is part of the squad.
The match-up that matters
Salt against Boult in the first over. Salt likes to go hard from the first ball; Boult's strength is the inswinger to the right-hander. That contest could set the tone for RDC's innings. Later, Theekshana against Powell and Hetmyer will be interesting — mystery spin against two left-and-right power hitters who want to clear the rope.
As with every side in the opening round, final XIs will only be confirmed at the toss. The names above are the most likely, not guaranteed.
The verdict
This looks very evenly matched. RDC may have a slightly deeper bowling attack; the Eagles have Boult, who can win a game on his own with the new ball. Pooran's record as a T10 captain could be the difference. Then again, in a ten-over game, one bad over can undo any amount of planning.
