Renegades Found a Way in Hobart — Now They Meet a Strikers Side That Rarely Lets Anyone Off

Melbourne Renegades needed until the last over at Bellerive to register their first win of WBBL|12, and Sophie Molineux's 4 for 22 was the spell that made it possible. The Adelaide Strikers, by contrast, opened with 185 for 2 against the Stars and a 21-run win. Junction Oval on a Saturday afternoon is where we find out whether the Renegades have turned a corner or simply caught their breath.

Melbourne Renegades — one win, and the shape of a team

Two losses to open the season — to the Thunder by six wickets and to the Scorchers by nine — had the Renegades looking for answers. Hobart supplied some. Sophie Molineux took 4 for 22 with her left-arm spin, Georgia Wareham added 1 for 23, and Hayley Matthews then anchored the chase with 59 off 44. They got home with a ball to spare.

The batting has been the worry. Against the Thunder they made 138 for 9; against the Scorchers 136 for 6, rescued by Wareham's 62 off 39 and Nicole Faltum's 48. Matthews is the hinge — 45, 7 and 59 so far — and when she goes early the middle order has had to rebuild rather than accelerate. Deandra Dottin has not yet found her range (0, 5, 15), and a Dottin innings of any length changes a Renegades total by 30 runs.

A possible XI, if they keep the Hobart group: Matthews, Porter, Webb, Molineux, Wareham, Faltum (wk), Tryon, Dottin, Flintoff, Illingworth, Vlaeminck.

Adelaide Strikers — quality in every phase

The Strikers' opener against the Stars at Karen Rolton Oval was a reminder of how complete this side can be. Laura Wolvaardt made 70 off 50, Tahlia McGrath 43, and Madeline Penna smashed 36 off 13 at the end to take them to 185 for 2. Then the spinners squeezed: Amanda-Jade Wellington 3 for 28 and Sophie Ecclestone 2 for 25, with Eleanor Larosa taking 2 for 23 with the new ball.

They also play the Brisbane Heat on Thursday, and what happens there will shape how fresh and how settled they arrive in Melbourne. If the combination holds, a likely XI might read: Wolvaardt, Bouchier, McGrath, Penna, Patterson, Johnston, Larosa, Wellington, Ecclestone, Wilson, Mushangwe.

The match-up that matters

Matthews against Ecclestone could decide this game. Matthews likes to use the pace of the ball through the off side early; Ecclestone, arguably the best left-arm spinner in the world, takes pace away and attacks the stumps. If the Strikers hold Ecclestone back for Matthews and she survives the first two overs, the Renegades have a platform. If not, the middle order has to deal with Wellington's leg-spin and the scoreboard pressure that comes with it.

On the other side, Molineux and Wareham's spin through the middle overs against Wolvaardt's timing is just as interesting. Wolvaardt does not need to hit sixes to score quickly; she finds gaps. Junction Oval's square boundaries reward that kind of batting.

The verdict

The Strikers look the stronger side on paper and on early form. But the Renegades now have a win behind them, and the way they won in Hobart — holding their nerve in a tight chase — is the kind of thing that can carry over. If Matthews bats deep and Dottin comes off, the Renegades might well post a total that tests Adelaide. If the Strikers' spinners control the middle overs again, it could be another comfortable afternoon for them.
