A Sydney Derby on a Small Ground — Gardner's Sixers Against a Thunder Side That Chases Without Fear
The Sixers have won both their games, one off the last ball and one by 87 runs. The Thunder have won two of three and chased down 179 against the Heat with 20 balls to spare. North Sydney Oval on a Sunday afternoon, short boundaries and a city's bragging rights: this is the kind of game the WBBL was made for.
Sydney Sixers — two wins, two different heroes
The Sixers' season so far tells you how many ways they can win. Against the Heat at Allan Border Field they needed every ball of a chase of 155, and Ellyse Perry held it together with 58 off 38. Two days later against the Hurricanes, the top three made four runs between them and it did not matter: Ashleigh Gardner made 124 off 60 balls, Alice Capsey 54 off 40, and the Sixers reached 196 for 8. Then Gardner took 3 for 23 and Melie Kerr 3 for 25, and the Hurricanes were bowled out for 109.
That is a side with match-winners at both ends of the order and genuine depth with the ball. Caoimhe Bray (2 for 14 against Hobart) and Lauren Cheatle share the new ball; Kerr and Gardner bowl the middle; Sarah Coyte has the experience for the death. They also play the Stars at Junction Oval on Friday, so they arrive with either a perfect record or a fresh question to answer.
A possible XI, if they stay with the group that beat Hobart: Perry, Dunkley, Kerr, Gardner, Capsey, Ragg, Burns, Coyte, Cheatle, Bray, Nicklin. Nothing is settled until the toss.
Sydney Thunder — a batting order that does not wait
The Thunder's best cricket this season has come in the chase. They knocked off 139 against the Renegades with 18 balls to spare, Georgia Voll having taken 4 for 26 first. Against the Heat they chased 179 in 16.4 overs: Phoebe Litchfield 41 off 19, Heather Knight 54 off 29 and Laura Harris 35 off 16. That is not a team easing into a target. That is a team going to get it.
Thursday's loss to the Scorchers showed the other side. Chasing 184, they were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs, with Alana King taking 4 for 35. When the leg-spinner got among the middle order, the Thunder kept swinging and kept losing wickets. Against Gardner and Kerr, two spinners of real class, they may need a little more patience through the middle overs.
A likely XI, if they keep the side from Thursday: Voll, Litchfield, Learoyd, Knight, de Klerk, Wilson (wk), L Harris, Barsby, Darlington, Bell, Bates.
The pitch at North Sydney Oval
North Sydney Oval is one of the smaller grounds in the competition, and the square boundaries in particular reward clean hitting. Sides batting first often aim for 170 and above, and a good surface early in a double-header usually holds together well. A morning-to-afternoon start can give the seamers a little movement in the first few overs, which is where Lauren Bell for the Thunder and Bray for the Sixers could matter most. After that, the spinners who bowl straight and quick into the pitch tend to do best here.
The match-up that matters
Gardner against the Thunder's spinners, and Knight against Gardner. Gardner can take a game away with the bat in six overs, as Hobart found out. The Thunder may want to bowl Voll and Samantha Bates at her early, before she is set. On the other side, Knight is the Thunder's calmest head, and she plays spin as well as anyone in the league. If Knight is still there when Gardner and Kerr come on, the Thunder can keep the run rate under control. If she goes early, Litchfield and Harris have to take the risk on their own.
The verdict
Both sides have shown they can make big totals and chase them, and on this ground that could mean a very high-scoring afternoon. The Sixers look slightly more complete: they have more overs of top-class spin, and Gardner is in the form of her life. But the Thunder have chased 140 and 180 already this season without much fuss, and in a derby on a small ground a target is never safe. If the Sixers bat first and get to 180, they might just have enough. If the Thunder are chasing something smaller, it could be very close.
