The Champions Open the New Era — Pollard's Bulls Meet Holder's Yas Lions in the T10 Curtain-Raiser

The Abu Dhabi T10 has been rebuilt for 2026: new owners, new franchise names, and only one team carried over from last season. That team is the UAE Bulls, the defending champions, and they open the tournament against Jason Holder's Yas Lions. In a format where a single over can swing a game, the Bulls have the experience of having won it. The Lions have everything else to prove.

UAE Bulls — the champions, mostly intact

Last season the Bulls won just two of their first six games and then won four in a row, including all three playoff matches, to take the title. That run was built on West Indian power, and the core is back: Kieron Pollard as the icon player, Sunil Narine and Romario Shepherd retained, and Andre Fletcher added at the draft. Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan bring Pakistani skill with the ball, and local all-rounder Mohammad Rohid is in the squad too.

In ten-over cricket, Narine's value is double. He can open and take the powerplay apart, and he can bowl two overs that the opposition simply cannot attack. Amir with the new ball and Shadab's leg-spin give Pollard plenty of options. If the Bulls bat first, a total of 120-plus feels within reach for this group.

Yas Lions — new name, serious names

The Lions are one of the five new franchises, and they have built around Jason Holder, with David Willey, James Vince, Dasun Shanaka, Akeal Hosein, Obed McCoy and Eshan Malinga among the signings. UAE batter Khuzaima Tanveer is part of the local contingent.

That is a squad with a lot of all-round depth. Willey and McCoy give them two left-armers to open the bowling; Hosein can bowl in the powerplay. Holder's height and control at the death are valuable in any format. The question for a new team is cohesion: who opens, who finishes, and whether the plans hold up on the first night.

The match-up that matters

Narine against Hosein, the left-arm spinner. If Narine opens, the Lions may want Hosein's flat, quick spin early to stop him using the pace. If Narine gets through the first two overs, the Bulls' middle order with Pollard and Shepherd can take a ten-over innings a long way.

Final XIs will only be known at the toss, and with squads assembling from different leagues around the world, both sides may be working around late arrivals. The players named above are the likeliest to feature, not a certainty.

The verdict

The Bulls have the advantage of continuity and a title-winning group that knows this ground and this format. The Lions have the kind of squad that could beat anyone on any night, but they have to work out their combinations quickly. In T10, an opening game often goes to the side that settles faster, and that is more likely to be the champions. It might not be by much.
