An East African Derby at Entebbe — Uganda's Victoria Pearls Host Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda have played each other often enough that there are no secrets left. The Victoria Pearls have home conditions and the weight of being the hosts; Rwanda have one of the most improved women's programmes in the region. On the second afternoon of the Women's Victoria T20 Series, this is the fixture the Entebbe crowd will care about most.

The contest

Uganda open the series against Namibia on Friday, and Rwanda play USA that afternoon, so both sides arrive here with a game in their legs. The Victoria Pearls, led in their April home tournament by Janet Mbabazi, know this ground as well as anyone and tend to build their game around spin and tight fielding. Rwanda have grown into a side that can compete with anyone in East Africa, and they will not be overawed by the setting.

Regional derbies like this tend to be decided by the small things: a run-out, a dropped catch, a spell of three dot-ball overs in the middle. The afternoon start means the pitch may have dried out, which could bring the spinners into it more. Both sides may adjust their XIs after Friday's games, so lineups are best treated as provisional until the toss.

The verdict

Uganda look like favourites, with home conditions, a crowd behind them and a deeper squad. But Rwanda have closed the gap with their neighbours in recent years, and in a single T20 that gap can disappear quickly. If the Pearls bat first and post a competitive total, their spinners could make it very difficult. If Rwanda's top order gets them through the powerplay without losing wickets, this could go down to the last few overs.
