Russell and Livingstone Against a Pakistani-Afghan Core — The Opening Night Ends Under Lights
The last game of the Abu Dhabi T10's opening night brings together United Tigers, built around Pakistani and Afghan cricketers, and Arabian Aces, whose batting has Andre Russell and Liam Livingstone in it. Both are new franchises in a rebuilt league. By the time this one starts, the tournament will have had two games to show what the pitch is doing, and both sides will have been watching.
United Tigers — a strong Pakistani and Afghan spine
The Tigers' squad has a clear identity. Fakhar Zaman opens and can take a ten-over game away in four overs. Iftikhar Ahmed and Faheem Ashraf are seasoned finishers, and Azmatullah Omarzai brings pace and hitting from the Afghanistan side. Sufyan Moqim's left-arm wrist spin and Abbas Afridi's slower balls give them variety, and Odean Smith, signed at the draft, adds Caribbean power at No. 7 or 8.
Pakistan's players will need to fit around their international commitments, so the Tigers' XI could change across the fortnight. For the opener, the likeliest core is the one named here.
Arabian Aces — the biggest hitters in the tournament?
On paper the Aces may have the most explosive middle order in the competition: Andre Russell, Liam Livingstone and Sam Billings, with Moeen Ali named as captain. Alzarri Joseph brings pace, Imran Tahir leg-spin and experience, and UAE's Alishan Sharafu is among the local players.
One thing to watch: Moeen has been playing in the Nepal Premier League for Janakpur Bolts, and the two tournaments overlap. Whether he is available for the opener, and who leads if he is not, may only become clear close to the game.
The match-up that matters
Russell against Moqim and Afridi at the death. Russell is at his most dangerous against pace on a true surface, and Zayed under lights usually offers one. The Tigers will probably want to bowl their spinner to him and save Afridi's variations for the last two overs. If Russell faces 15 balls, the Aces could get to 130.
Fakhar against Joseph is the other contest. Joseph's extra pace and bounce can trouble anyone early; Fakhar likes width and will punish anything short and wide.
The verdict
The Aces' batting is frightening, but the Tigers' squad looks more balanced, with genuine all-rounders and more spin options. In T10, balance usually matters less than impact, and Russell and Livingstone have the most impact of anyone here. This could be the highest-scoring game of the opening night. If Moeen is unavailable, the Tigers might just edge it.
