The Tigers Turn Around Fast — and Meet the Champions Who Know This Ground Best

The match

Last season the Bulls won just two of their first six games, then won four in a row, including all three playoff matches, to take the title. The core is back: Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Romario Shepherd, with Andre Fletcher, Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan added. The Tigers, a new franchise, have a strong Pakistani and Afghan spine: Fakhar Zaman at the top, Iftikhar Ahmed and Faheem Ashraf to finish, Azmatullah Omarzai with bat and ball, and Sufyan Moqim and Abbas Afridi for variety. After one game each, nobody is clear at the top of the table yet, but an early second win would matter for either side.

Pitch and possible XIs

This is the middle game of the triple-header, starting at sunset. The pitch should still be good for batting, and some dew could start to come in during the second innings, which may make captains want to chase. The straight boundaries at Zayed are long, so the hitters who go square, like Pollard and Fakhar, could do best.

The XIs will only be confirmed at the toss, and the Tigers' Pakistan players have international commitments to fit around. A possible core for the Tigers: Fakhar, Iftikhar, Faheem, Omarzai, Odean Smith, Moqim and Afridi. For the Bulls: Narine, Fletcher, Pollard, Shepherd, Shadab, Amir and local all-rounder Mohammad Rohid. These are the likeliest names, not a certainty.

The verdict

The Bulls have the continuity and the title-winning habits; the Tigers have balance, but also a short turnaround after a late finish on Saturday night. That could tilt things a little towards the champions. Narine, who can open the batting and then bowl two overs nobody wants to attack, is the hardest player on the ground to plan for. If Fakhar gets going early, though, the Tigers could well win this.
