AFG vs BAN, Only Test — Day 1 Stumps: Bangladesh 317/8 as Tanzid's 83 Sets the Pace and Afghanistan Fight Back in Abu Dhabi
A 124-run opening stand, Tanzid Hasan's 71-ball 83 and Shadman Islam's 67 put Bangladesh in command by mid-afternoon. Then three wickets fell for four runs, from 221 for 2 to 225 for 5, and Afghanistan were back in it. Litton Das's 53 rebuilt the innings, and Mohammad Saleem's two strikes in the 80th over left Bangladesh 317 for 8 at the close at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Bangladesh will look at 317 for 8 and feel they have had the better of the day. Afghanistan will look at the same scoreboard and remember that at one point it read 221 for 2. Both readings are true, and that is what makes this one-off Test in Abu Dhabi so intriguing after 84 overs: a day of two halves that ended without either side quite able to claim it outright.
Morning — Tanzid takes the attack to Afghanistan
Bangladesh chose to bat and Tanzid Hasan treated the first session like an invitation. He reached his fifty off 41 balls with seven fours and a six, and Bangladesh were 69 without loss at the first drinks break, Tanzid on 49 of them. The hundred came up in the 18th over. When Ismat Alam finally had him caught behind by Ikram Alikhil in the 23rd over, Tanzid had made 83 off 71 balls with eight fours and four sixes, and the opening stand was worth 124. Lunch: 134 for 1 in 26 overs.
Afternoon — command, then a collapse
Shadman Islam, the anchor to Tanzid's accelerator, reached a 94-ball fifty and added 60 with Mominul Haque before Mohammad Saleem had him caught by Zia-ur-Rehman for 67 — 184 for 2. Bangladesh were 199 for 2 at drinks and passed 200 in the 41st over. Then, in the space of three overs, the innings lurched. Yamin Ahmadzai had Mominul caught by Rahmat Shah for 39 (221/3), bowled Mushfiqur Rahim for a seven-ball duck (223/4), and Qais Ahmad had Najmul Hossain Shanto caught by a substitute fielder for 29 (225/5). Three wickets for four runs. Tea: 226 for 5 in 52 overs.
Evening — Litton rebuilds, Saleem strikes back
Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz steadied things with a 62-run stand off 130 balls, until Ismat Alam bowled Mehidy for 24 (287/6). Litton went on to an 87-ball half-century and Bangladesh passed 300 in the 79th over, but Saleem then struck twice in the 80th: Litton caught by Yamin Ahmadzai for 53 (303/7), and Hasan Mahmud bowled for 2 (305/8). Nayeem Hasan (11*) and Taijul Islam (4*) saw Bangladesh to stumps at 317 for 8.
For the first two sessions Afghanistan's attack looked like it might be overrun, but it never stopped asking questions. Mohammad Saleem was the most incisive, taking 3 for 70 from 19 overs — Shadman, then Litton and Hasan Mahmud. Yamin Ahmadzai's double strike in the 48th and 50th overs (2 for 62) was the turning point of the day. The quiet hero was Ismat Alam: 12.4 overs, five maidens, 2 for 20, at an economy of 1.57 on a day when Bangladesh scored at almost 3.8 an over. He removed Tanzid, the most dangerous batter in the match, and Mehidy just as the sixth-wicket stand was settling.
Zia-ur-Rehman wheeled through 19 overs without a wicket for 77, and Qais Ahmad took 1 for 60. Afghanistan conceded only five extras all day — a tidy effort in the field.
The template was close to ideal for a first day: Tanzid's aggression and Shadman's patience put 124 on the board before the first wicket fell, and the top three made 39 or more apiece. The concern is what followed. Mushfiqur's duck and the three-wicket slide meant that a total that had promised much more now rests on the last two wickets. Litton Das's 53 was the innings of a man who understood that the morning's freedom had to give way to graft — four boundaries in 89 balls, the runs gathered rather than taken.
Tanzid's innings is the one people will remember: four sixes in a Test-match first session is the stuff of a batter in a hurry, and for a couple of hours the desert light seemed to bend to his bat. But Test cricket keeps its own ledger, and Afghanistan's afternoon fightback reminded everyone that one session does not make a day.
CricIntel did not publish a pre-match preview for this Only Test, so there is no prediction to check against.
Bangladesh will hope Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam, with Ebadot Hossain still to come, can add useful runs. Afghanistan want the last two wickets quickly, and then the real test begins: can their batters match a Bangladesh innings built on the sort of opening stand Afghanistan's own top order will need to replicate? One day in, the match is poised, with Bangladesh holding a modest edge.
