Day 1 belonged to Brendan Taylor, the old hand back in whites. Day 2 belonged to the man now leading the side. Brian Bennett walked out on 71, captaining Zimbabwe in a Test for the first time, and did not leave until he had 128 and his team had 437. By the time the last wicket fell Zimbabwe had 504, their two centurions a generation apart.

Afghanistan then did something that matters in a long game: they batted out the evening. At 14 for 1 a bad session could have ended this Test as a contest. Instead Sediqullah Atal and Rahmanullah, a debutant, put on 99 without being parted. Afghanistan are 113 for 1 and still 391 behind, but they are not in a hole yet.

How the Day Unfolded

Morning — Bennett and Madhevere

Zimbabwe had lost three for 25 after tea on the first day, so the first hour mattered. Bennett and Madhevere made it theirs. Madhevere was the busier of the two, reaching 50 off 65 balls with eight fours, and their stand took 64 balls to reach 50. Afghanistan went short at Madhevere, and it worked in the end: Ziaur Rahman's bouncer got too big on him, he tried to leave it, the bat face stayed up and the top edge went to Ikram Alikhil. He made 54, and the stand was 96.

Bennett had reached his hundred off 178 balls by then, with eight fours, and he went to lunch on 123 with Zimbabwe 421 for 6.

Afternoon — 500, and the end

Bennett fell soon after lunch, and it annoyed him. Qais Ahmad floated one full and wide, Bennett went for the big hit, miscued it towards cover and Zia-ur-Rehman ran back and held it. It ended a 362-minute innings. Tsiga added 54 with him and made 44 before Qais trapped him lbw on the back foot. Graeme Cremer stayed to the end on 34 not out, and Saleem cleaned up Nyamhuri and Muzarabani, the last of them bowled by a ball on the off stump channel as he backed away. Zimbabwe passed 500 in the 134th over and were all out for 504.

Evening — Atal and Rahmanullah

Abdul Malik fell in the sixth over, caught behind off Newman Nyamhuri for 2, and Afghanistan were 14 for 1. From there, nothing. Rahmanullah, in his first Test innings, was the quicker scorer, getting to 50 off 78 balls with seven fours. Atal took 101 balls for his half-century, with two sixes among his boundaries. Zimbabwe used five bowlers and none got through. Nyamhuri's 7-3-10-1 was the pick of them.

The View From Each Dressing Room

For Zimbabwe, 504 is a total that lets you set the terms. Two batters made hundreds, five more passed 30, and the tail added 67 for the last three wickets. The evening was the only part of the day that did not go to plan. Muzarabani and Cremer, the experienced pair, went for 70 in 19 overs without a wicket.

For Afghanistan, Saleem was again the most threatening bowler, with three wickets at under three an over, and Qais got his three by giving the ball air. But Zia-ur-Rehman bowled 46 overs for 170, which says a lot about how long they spent in the field. The reply has made a good start. Afghanistan need 305 to avoid being asked to follow on, which is 192 more.

The Pitch

Two days in, the surface is still good for batting. The wickets came from loose shots or from short balls and straight ones rather than from big turn: Bennett's slog, Madhevere's top edge, two lbws, one stump knocked over by a seamer. The spinners had to work hard. Zimbabwe will hope it starts to turn for Cremer and Naqvi as it wears on Day 3.

Player Spotlight — Brian Bennett

128 off 206 balls, 11 fours, no sixes, 362 minutes. A captain's innings in the plainest sense: not the most fluent on the card, Taylor's was that, but the one that stayed. He shared stands of 137 with Taylor, 96 with Madhevere and 54 with Tsiga, and Taylor and Madhevere both scored faster than he did. That was the point. On his first day leading the side, he decided he would be the one who did not get out. He got out only once he tried to hit, and he knew it the moment the ball left the bat.

CricIntel Prediction Review

Our preview made Afghanistan slight favourites. With Zimbabwe on 504, that call looks worse after two days, not better. The squad misses covered in the Day 1 report still stand. The one hopeful sign for our read is that Afghanistan's batting has started well on a pitch that still looks flat.

What to Watch on Day 3

Afghanistan need 192 more to save the follow-on, and the Atal and Rahmanullah stand is the key to that. Watch the first hour against Muzarabani and Nyamhuri, and watch whether Cremer can find any turn. If Afghanistan bat through the day, this becomes a draw-shaped Test. If Zimbabwe break through early, Bennett may get to enforce the follow-on.
