Archer Says the Speed Guns Are 'Dodgy' — Pakistan's Batters Disagree

There is a particular brand of fast bowler who runs in at 94 mph, watches the ball thud into the keeper's gloves chest-high, sees the speed flash up on the big screen, and then tells the media the equipment must be faulty. Jofra Archer is that bowler.

Day two at Lord's. Pakistan already under pressure after England's 290. Archer opened the bowling after lunch and produced the fastest spell of his Test career — an average of 90.7 mph across his opening burst, with the odd delivery touching 94. The Nursery End speed gun was, by Archer's reckoning, having the day of its life. By everyone else's reckoning, so was Archer.

He took 3-26 from 11.2 overs. Robinson, operating from the Pavilion End like a man bowling in a county net session, took 4-11 from 13 overs including six maidens. Between them, England's seamers dismantled Pakistan for 110 in 37.2 overs — a first-innings deficit of 180 that became 261 by stumps.

While Archer got the headlines for raw pace, Robinson produced something arguably more devastating: 13 overs, six maidens, four wickets, eleven runs. Read those numbers again. 4-11 from 13 overs. In a Test match. At Lord's. Against a team that was trying very hard to bat.

Robinson's method was the opposite of Archer's theatre. No 94 mph thunderbolts. No Hollywood moments. Just relentless, nagging accuracy on a length that offered nothing — no width to cut, no overpitch to drive, no short ball to pull. Pakistan's batters were not so much dismissed as slowly suffocated.

Josh Tongue chipped in with 2-27 and Gus Atkinson went wicketless but kept things tight. This was a four-man seam attack operating as a unit, each bowler feeding off the pressure created by the last. Mark Wood, watching from the Sky Sports commentary box, could barely contain himself.

While nine of his teammates came and went around him like commuters through a revolving door, Azan Awais stood still. The 20-year-old opener faced 170 balls for his 46 — an innings of extraordinary patience and nerve that would have been celebrated as a match-saving effort if anyone else had bothered to stick around.

He faced 44 balls in the first 15 overs and scored off just five of them — four singles and a boundary. He played and missed. He left. He ducked. He survived. And then, when he had the measure of the pitch, he unfurled two cover drives off Archer that had the Lord's members nodding approvingly through their gin and tonics.

Archer, not a man given to complimenting opposition batters mid-series, was genuinely impressed.

Archer's self-deprecating speed-gun routine is funny, but it also reveals something important about this England attack: nobody has to do it alone. Robinson can be metronomic because Archer has already unsettled the batters with pace. Tongue can nip one away because Robinson has already dried up the runs. Atkinson can hold an end because the other three have already done the damage.

It is the most cohesive England seam attack since the Anderson-Broad-Woakes-Stokes quartet of the mid-2010s, and in some ways more dangerous — because it has genuine, 94-mph pace at the top.

At stumps on Day 2, England led by 261 with seven second-innings wickets in hand. Emilio Gay was unbeaten on 30, Harry Brook on 7. Shahzad and Mohammad Ali had picked up three wickets between them to give Pakistan a sniff, including the prized scalp of Joe Root for 24 — his ninth lbw in recent dismissals, a sequence that has become its own sub-plot.

But a sniff is all it is. England are already 1-0 up after a three-day innings win at Trent Bridge. A second win at Lord's would seal the series. Pakistan, who have now lost eight consecutive away Tests, are running out of road, out of runs, and — judging by the 110 all out — out of answers to English seam bowling.

The speed guns at Lord's may or may not be dodgy. What is not in doubt is that Jofra Archer, at 31, is bowling faster and more dangerously than at any point in his career. He just refuses to believe it.
