Seventy-Five for Nine: Argentina Women Survive Canada by a Single Wicket in Buenos Aires

It is a defensible read on a wet, slow pitch. It is also a strategy that hands the opposition a target they can chase in almost any manner they like, and 74 in a T20 international leaves no margin at all for a good bowling performance to matter.

Except that it very nearly did matter. Argentina's nine wickets in pursuit of 75 is a remarkable number in the other direction — evidence that Canada's bowlers found something in the surface that their batters could not, and that they came within one wicket of defending the indefensible. On another day, with one more breakthrough, this is a Canadian win that gets talked about for years.

The two sides know each other well. Argentina beat Canada by a single run at this same ground in the Americas regional qualifier in March 2025, and Canada won a later meeting in the same tournament by 36 runs. A one-wicket margin in the first match of this tour fits the pattern: these are closely matched teams whose fixtures are decided in the last few overs, and the series that follows over the coming days should be worth watching for that reason alone.
