Batty won three County titles at Surrey. Now he's someone's assistant at CSK.
The most successful county coach in a generation has traded The Oval for Chennai, swapping the top job for a support role under Zaheer Khan. CSK's post-Fleming rebuild tells you everything about where the power lies in modern cricket.
The trade that tells you everything
Gareth Batty led Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024. That is the single most dominant stretch in English domestic cricket this century. It took relentless squad management, tactical nous and what his director of cricket Alec Stewart called "a fierce will to win."
And on October 26, 2026, Batty walked away from it all — not for a national coaching job, not for a rival county, not for retirement. He left to become an assistant coach at Chennai Super Kings under Zaheer Khan.
Read that again. Three titles. Twenty-one years at the club. The top job. Gone. To be someone's number two in a six-week tournament.
Thank you hardly seems enough for all that Surrey has meant to me. It has been a privilege to serve this great club, to share in its success and challenges.Gareth Batty, farewell statement, October 26, 2026
Why the best county coach in England said yes
Batty is 49. He has spent his entire adult life in English cricket — player, captain, head coach. He took the Surrey job in 2021, straight off ending a 24-year playing career, and immediately built a dynasty. Three Championships. Oval Invincibles title-winner as an assistant in 2025. A stint at MI London this year.
That MI London connection matters. Batty already had one foot in the franchise world. And when CSK came calling after Stephen Fleming's departure to become England's Test head coach, the pitch was irresistible: join a franchise that has won five IPL titles, work alongside an old Worcestershire teammate in Zaheer Khan, help reshape the most iconic brand in Indian cricket.
The counterpoint is brutal. Surrey finished seventh this season after flirting with relegation. The dynasty cracked. And Batty chose to leave rather than rebuild. That tells you where the ambition lies — not at The Oval anymore.

CSK's post-Fleming identity crisis
The bigger story here is what CSK are building — or trying to. Fleming ran the dugout for 16 seasons. Five titles. A coaching partnership with MS Dhoni that defined an era. When Fleming left for England's Test job in July, CSK did not just lose a head coach. They lost their institutional memory.
Zaheer Khan was appointed in September with Dhoni's blessing — CSK's managing director confirmed the former India captain was part of the decision. Eric Simons and James Foster arrived as assistants. Now Batty. And former India pacer Mohit Sharma is reportedly joining as bowling coach.
It is a complete coaching reset, and it is being assembled at speed ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction in Goa on December 16.
The feeling is still sinking in. CSK is a franchise which has the legacy, rich history of cricket and big shoes to fill in. It is going to be very challenging, at the same time exciting.Zaheer Khan, CSK official YouTube channel, September 2026
The IPL coaching drain is real
Batty's move is not an isolated case. It is a pattern. Fleming left CSK for the England job — itself a sign that IPL coaching credentials now outweigh international ones on a CV. Jayawardene left Mumbai Indians after nine years and an IPL 2026 disaster. Gary Kirsten, Andy Flower, Tom Moody, Ricky Ponting — the coaching carousel between international and franchise cricket spins faster every year.
But Batty's departure is different because of what he is giving up. He is not a former international coach looking for a franchise gig. He is a county coach at the peak of his powers — three titles in three years — voluntarily stepping down to a junior role. That is the IPL's gravitational pull laid bare. The money, the profile, the global exposure: it now outweighs even the most successful domestic career in England.
His achievement in leading the side to three consecutive County Championship titles is a reflection of his hard work, his understanding of the players and his fierce will to win.Alec Stewart, Surrey director of cricket, October 26, 2026
What it means for Surrey — and English cricket
Stewart's tribute was gracious. He praised Batty's commitment, his knowledge, his determination. What he did not say is what comes next. Surrey now need to replace the architect of their greatest modern era during an off-season that has already seen significant player movement across the county circuit.
For English cricket more broadly, the message is stark. The ECB has spent years trying to compete with the IPL for playing talent — and mostly failing. Now the coaching pipeline is draining too. Fleming to England was celebrated as a coup. Batty to CSK is a loss. And when the next successful county coach gets a franchise call, there is no reason to think the answer will be different.
Batty's new journey starts at the IPL 2027 mini-auction in December. He will help Zaheer Khan and the CSK brain trust try to rebuild a squad that finished eighth last season. It is a long way from three Championship trophies in the cabinet at The Oval. But in 2026, the IPL is where the ambition lives — even if it means being someone else's assistant.
