One Hundred and Seven for Three, All Out for 134 — Barbados Lose Seven for Twenty-Seven and the WCPL Opener With Them

Collapses in T20 cricket usually have an obvious trigger — a spell, a run-out, a passage of two overs where everything goes at once. This one had none. Barbados Tridents Women simply stopped being able to score, and then stopped being able to survive, and the two things happened at the same time.

They were 107 for 3 in the thirteenth over of a 156 chase. Kiran Navgire was set on 28, Maddy Green had just made 24 from 16, and the required rate was under seven. Twenty-two balls later they were 121 for 9.

Trinbago Knight Riders Women won the Women's Caribbean Premier League opener by 21 runs, and will be the first to admit they were not the better side for the first three-quarters of it.

Hayley Matthews won the toss and bowled, and for four and a bit overs it looked like the worst decision of the evening. Laura Harris and Yastika Bhatia put on 50 in twenty-seven deliveries and 67 in 5.4 overs, Harris making 33 of the first fifty and finishing with 38 from 19 — four fours, three sixes, an opening burst that had Trinbago on 71 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Then Matthews had Harris caught by Maddy Green, and the Riders spent the next fifteen overs slowly giving the innings back. Deandra Dottin made 14 from 15 and was stumped by Mandy Mangru off Suzie Bates. Bhatia was stumped by Mangru in the next over, off Qiana Joseph. Marizanne Kapp took eleven balls over eight.

Madeline Penna's 27 from 21 with four fours was the only innings after the opening stand with any urgency in it, and when she was bowled by Joseph at 133 for 5 in the seventeenth, Trinbago had three overs and five wickets to make a total out of a start. They made 22 and lost all five — the last of them, Samara Ramnath run out off the final ball of the innings.

Barbados's four frontline bowlers were excellent: Joseph 3 for 27, Matthews 2 for 26, Bates 2 for 25, Afy Fletcher 1 for 31. Sixteen overs, 109 runs, eight wickets, and two run-outs to go with them. Mandy Mangru took two stumpings behind the stumps. On a ground where 155 looked thirty short, that is a fielding performance to build a season on.

The chase started exactly as Barbados wanted. Fifty came up in 6.4 overs, Matthews hit two sixes in a 13-ball 19, and although she and Joseph both fell inside six overs, Maddy Green and Kiran Navgire put on 39 to make it 85 for 3 at the ten-over drinks break with the required rate under seven.

Green was caught off Steffie Soogrim; Naijanni Cumberbatch was bowled by Shikha Pandey at 107 for 4 in the thirteenth. That is the pivot. Forty-nine needed from forty-four balls, six wickets standing, Navgire set on 28 and Pooja Vastrakar to come.

What followed: Suzie Bates run out for one by Dottin and Bhatia off the second ball of the fourteenth. Navgire lbw to Samara Ramnath four balls later, having reviewed and lost it. Vastrakar caught by Pandey off Dottin at 113. Shabika Gajnabi caught by Harris off Ramnath at 115. Shawnisha Hector bowled by Dottin at 121.

One hundred and seven for three to 121 for nine in twenty-two deliveries. Six wickets for fourteen runs. Afy Fletcher and Mandy Mangru added thirteen for the last wicket, and Fletcher's 13 from 10 with two fours was the only aggression Barbados found after the twelfth over. Pandey came back to have her caught by Jahzara Claxton, and the season opener was done with eight balls unused.

Shikha Pandey finished with 3 for 17 from 3.4 overs — 4.63 an over in a match where 289 runs were scored in 38.4. She took Matthews early, Cumberbatch at the pivot and Fletcher at the end, which is to say she removed the Barbados captain, the batter who could have anchored the middle, and the last player capable of hitting a boundary.

Samara Ramnath's 4-0-16-2 was the most economical spell of the night. Deandra Dottin's four overs cost 24 and brought two wickets, and the run-out she engineered with Bhatia to remove Suzie Bates was the moment the chase became panicked rather than merely awkward.

Between them, Pandey, Ramnath and Dottin bowled 11.4 overs for 57 runs and seven wickets. Kapp and Soogrim's five overs cost 48. Trinbago's captain used her three best bowlers for the eleven overs that mattered and it was enough by twenty-one runs.

Kensington Oval under lights was a good batting surface and both sides proved it before ignoring it — 50 up in 27 balls for Trinbago, 50 in 40 balls for Barbados, and neither innings surviving its full twenty overs. Twenty wickets fell for 289 runs in 38.4 overs, which is not what the pitch deserved.

The pattern was consistent: pace on the ball worked, pace off it worked better. Ramnath's 16 from four and Pandey's 17 from 3.4 came against batters looking to hit through the line on a surface where the ball was holding just enough. Barbados's own slower bowlers, Joseph and Fletcher, took four between them for 58.

Three DRS reviews, all struck down, the last of them Navgire's failed challenge to the lbw that ended the chase's last real hope.

This match didn't have a CricIntel preview — it was the first fixture of the WCPL 2026 season and we'll have full analysis from here on. What the opener established, and what we will carry into the rest of the tournament, is that Barbados have the better bowling attack and neither side has a settled middle order: Trinbago lost their last five wickets for 22 in three overs and only won because Barbados lost seven for twenty-seven.

Trinbago Knight Riders Women start the season with two points and a win they did not control. Laura Harris's 38 from 19 was the most destructive batting of the night and Shikha Pandey's 3 for 17 the most controlled bowling; the concern is a middle order that turned 118 for 3 into 155 all out.

Barbados Tridents Women will be furious, and rightly. They bowled Trinbago out, took two stumpings and two run-outs, had four bowlers under eight an over, and were 107 for 3 chasing 156 with seven overs and a bit left. Hayley Matthews has an attack. What she does not yet have is a middle order that can play out a difficult ten minutes.

The number to keep is thirty-six: the balls in which Barbados lost seven wickets on the opening night of their own tournament, on their own ground, in front of their own crowd.
