Connolly's 'Tempo Game' Is Making the IPL's Power Hitters Look One-Dimensional
At 22, the youngest overseas centurion in IPL history has 377 runs at 171 strike rate for Punjab Kings — and he's done it by modelling himself on Shaun Marsh, not Chris Gayle. His coach already sees an Australian future. The IPL should see a warning.
The Anti-Template
The modern IPL batter has a template: see ball, hit ball over the fence. Premeditate the scoop, load up the slog, hope the middle holds. Cooper Connolly didn't get that memo. Or rather, he got it and politely declined.
In a tournament where 171 strike rate would ordinarily mean a diet of sixes and adrenaline, the 22-year-old Western Australian is getting there differently. He calls it a "tempo game." In a recent interview ahead of his maiden IPL century, Connolly was disarmingly candid about his approach: he's not interested in someone else's gameplan.
"I think each player has their own strengths, and I'm pretty keen to stick to my own strengths. It's been successful for me so far. Power is becoming a big part of T20 cricket, but there's other ways."Cooper Connolly, ahead of PBKS vs SRH, May 2026
The Shaun Marsh Blueprint
Connolly didn't pick his role model from a highlights reel of sixes. He picked Shaun Marsh — a player whose IPL debut for the same franchise in 2008 produced an 84* and a Player of the Match award. Eighteen years later, Connolly debuted for Punjab Kings against Gujarat Titans and scored 72* off 44 balls. Same franchise. Same composure. Same award.
The parallels are almost eerie. Both left-handers from Western Australia. Both made their names at this franchise with innings built on timing, not muscle. Connolly grew up watching Marsh and spent time around him coming through the WA system. He's open about the influence — but smart enough to know where the comparison ends.
"I sort of grew up watching Shaun. I used to just love watching him. He just played the game on his terms."Cooper Connolly on Shaun Marsh, May 2026

A Century That Deserved Better
On May 6 in Hyderabad, Connolly played the innings of the IPL 2026 season. Unbeaten on 107 off 59 balls — seven fours, eight sixes — against the tournament's most feared bowling attack. He became the youngest overseas batter to score an IPL century, at 22 years and 257 days, surpassing Quinton de Kock and David Warner in the record books.
Punjab Kings lost by 33 runs. They dropped catches of Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen in the field, gifting SRH 30-40 extra runs that Connolly's heroics couldn't claw back. His captain was blunt about where the match was lost — and where the individual brilliance stood.
"Connolly is phenomenal. His mindset is top-notch. He has a knack for scoring big runs in pressure situations."Shreyas Iyer, PBKS captain, post-match, May 6, 2026
The Coach Sees a National Career
Punjab Kings spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule hasn't just been watching the runs. He's been watching the temperament. And he's seen enough to make a prediction that goes well beyond franchise cricket.
"He's a very good allrounder in the making, fabulous fielder and he's got a good head on his shoulders. Definitely he'll play a long period for Australia."Sairaj Bahutule, PBKS spin-bowling coach, May 7, 2026
Adaptation as Evidence
Bahutule's conviction isn't based on one knock. Connolly arrived in India for the Australia A tour in late 2025 and immediately showed he could adjust — 70 off 84 in his first first-class match, then 147 runs across three List A games at a strike rate of 145. The IPL has only accelerated the curve.
What makes the praise significant is the specificity. Bahutule isn't just saying Connolly is talented. He's saying the 22-year-old has adapted to different venues, different pitches, and different pressures — the things that separate IPL tourists from IPL fixtures.
"The way he has adapted as an overseas player has been fabulous to see at that age — to come and play in different venues, different pitches and perform so well."Sairaj Bahutule on Connolly's IPL adaptation, May 7, 2026
The Tempo Warning
The IPL has spent years optimising for power. Bigger bats, shorter boundaries, impact subs designed to unleash pinch-hitters. The assumption is that the future belongs to whoever clears the rope most often. Connolly suggests otherwise.
At 171 strike rate with 26 sixes, he's not exactly allergic to boundaries. But the 31 fours tell the real story. He manipulates the field, accelerates through timing, and treats the crease like a chessboard rather than a launch pad. It's Shaun Marsh cricket transplanted into a format that was supposed to have killed it off. PBKS need to find a way to field catches before they waste what might be their most significant find since that original Marsh season in 2008.
