CSK buy Livingstone at half price, and SRH get out of a ₹13 crore mistake

SRH paid ₹13 crore for 15 IPL runs. CSK now get Livingstone for ₹6 crore and Jack Edwards with him, but they give up their only proven left-arm quick to do it.

Four players, two problems solved

The IPL 2027 trade window has its first headline deal. Chennai Super Kings have sent Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to Sunrisers Hyderabad. In return they get Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards.

The fee is the real story. SRH bought Livingstone for ₹13 crore at the 2026 auction. He moves to CSK at ₹6 crore. Edwards goes on his existing ₹3 crore. Khaleel (₹4.8 crore) and Ellis (₹2 crore) move to Hyderabad on their current fees.

Both teams had a problem. SRH had an expensive overseas allrounder they had stopped picking. CSK had two seamers coming off injuries. Each side took the other's problem.

SRH: ₹13 crore for 15 runs

Livingstone's IPL 2026 is easy to summarise. He played two innings and scored 15 runs, then lost his place in the XI and the Impact Player slot as well. At ₹13 crore, that is close to ₹87 lakh a run.

SRH were never going to retain him at that price. Releasing him would only have put him back into the auction pool. Trading him brings back two seamers SRH clearly wanted. Khaleel played for them from 2018 to 2021. Ellis has just spent the summer with Sunrisers Leeds, their sister team in the Hundred.

Khaleel now joins T Natarajan, the other left-arm seamer SRH got back by trade from Delhi Capitals. Ellis brings 19 wickets from 17 IPL games at an economy of 8.66. He has bowled almost nothing in the last two seasons, though. He played one game for CSK in two years and missed IPL 2026 with injury.

CSK: the 33-year-old and the 26-year-old

For CSK, Livingstone at ₹6 crore is a different deal from Livingstone at ₹13 crore. He has 8,595 runs and 171 wickets in 370 T20s. He also bowls both offspin and legspin, which is useful at Chepauk.

His current form is the concern. In the inaugural ETPL he scored 219 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 128.82 for Glasgow Cosmic. That is a modest return for a player whose IPL strike rate is above 155. CSK are betting on his record, and at less than half the old price the bet is affordable.

Edwards may turn out to be the better signing. SRH bought him at the 2026 auction as the only uncapped overseas player sold. He then missed the whole season with a foot injury. Since then he has made his ODI and T20I debuts for Australia, and took a five-for in only his second ODI, against South Africa in Johannesburg. A 26-year-old seam-bowling allrounder for ₹3 crore is good value at any franchise.

The cost: CSK's left-arm pace

Khaleel took 15 wickets for CSK in IPL 2025. He played five games in 2026 before a quadriceps injury ended his season. With him gone, CSK's new-ball left-armers are Mukesh Choudhary and Gurjapneet Singh. Mukesh is a powerplay swing bowler. Gurjapneet is on the India A radar but has little IPL experience.

That is a thin group for a team that has long relied on left-arm angle with the new ball. CSK spent ₹2.2 crore more than they gave up and lost their most reliable powerplay seamer. Expect them to look for a left-arm quick at the Goa mini-auction on December 16.

CricIntel verdict

SRH win on accounts. They cleared most of a ₹13 crore mistake and got back two bowlers who know their set-up.

CSK win on upside, if Edwards stays fit and Livingstone is closer to his career numbers than his 2026 ones. Teams have until November 17 to finalise retentions, and this trade has already changed what both of them need at the auction.
