Denmark Beat Qatar by 52 Runs — 120 All Out Was Enough as Saif Ahmad and Abdullah Mahmood Take Four Each

Denmark chose to bat at the Gymkhana Club and were bowled out for 120 in the 37th over. Qatar, who had chased 156 in 14.5 overs the day before, were 27 for 3 in the third over and 68 all out in the 17th. Saif Ahmad took 4 for 31 and two catches; Abdullah Mahmood 4 for 15.

On Tuesday at this ground Qatar needed 156 and got there in 14.5 overs, Shahzeb Afridi hitting nine sixes along the way. On Wednesday they needed 121 and their innings lasted 98 balls. Denmark had chosen to bat and made only 120, Hamid Shah's 44 the one score of substance, and when Qatar were 26 for no wicket after two overs the pattern of the previous day seemed to be repeating itself. Then Saif Ahmad took three wickets in the third over.

From 27 for 3 Qatar went to 47 for 7 in the tenth over and 68 all out in the 17th, with Abdullah Mahmood taking 4 for 15 in six overs to go with Saif Ahmad's 4 for 31. Two Qatar batters were run out. Denmark won by 52 runs, a margin that looked impossible when their own innings had ended.

Denmark: 120 All Out, and a Last-Wicket Stand That Turned Out to Matter

Denmark's innings never found a footing. Musa Shaheen was run out by the keeper Imal Liyanage and Mirza Mohammed Baig at 18, and Lucky Ali, who had made 114 not out against Papua New Guinea three days earlier, was caught by Zubair Ali off Ikramullah Khan from the only ball he faced. Saif Ahmad went for 6 to the same bowler, and at 32 for 3 in the seventh over the top order was gone. Hamid Shah and Shangeev Thanikaithasan added 29, Thanikaithasan hitting four fours in 21 off 22 before Owais Ahmed bowled him, and then Sebastian Heath and Taranjit Bharaj went for five and four. At 72 for 6 in the 16th over Denmark were in danger of not using half their overs.

Hamid Shah held on. His 44 off 61 balls, with five fours and two sixes, was the only innings on either side to pass 21, and he added 24 with Surya Anand before Muhammad Asim had him caught by Mujeeb-ur-Rehman at 96. Asim bowled Abdullah Mahmood two balls later, then had Saud Munir caught at 104 for 9 in the 28th over. Asim's 3 for 15 in seven overs came a day after his 5 for 34 against PNG. The last pair, Surya Anand and Nicholas Sonne-Rudd, batted 51 balls for 16 runs, Anand's 21 off 65 containing no boundaries. They were slow and they were right to be: every one of those runs counted. Anand was caught off Owais Ahmed in the 37th over to end it.

Qatar: Three Wickets in Five Balls, and No Way Back

Qatar's reply began the way their Tuesday chase had. Shahzeb Afridi hit three fours and a six in 21 off 9 balls, and after two overs the score was 26 for no wicket, more than a fifth of the target gone already. Then Saif Ahmad took the ball for the third over. Zubair Ali was caught by Musa Shaheen from the first ball, Afridi was caught by Saud Munir two balls later, and Muhammad Asim was caught and bowled from the fifth. Qatar had lost three wickets for one run. Zeeshan Haider was run out by Lucky Ali without scoring in the next over, and at 31 for 4 the chase was already in a different shape.

Abdullah Mahmood took it from there. Liyanage was caught by Saif Ahmad at 44, Baig caught behind by Heath off Ahmad at 47, and Shahzaib Jamil caught by Surya Anand at the same score: 47 for 7 in the tenth over. Mahmood had Mujeeb-ur-Rehman caught by Musa Shaheen and Ikramullah Khan caught and bowled in the 14th over, both at 56, and finished the match by running out Owais Ahmed. Daniel Louis, with 13 not out off 25 including a six, was the only Qatar batter to stay at the crease for more than 17 balls. Six wides was more than seven of Qatar's eleven batters managed.

Two bowlers did almost all the work: Saif Ahmad and Mahmood bowled 14.2 of the 16.2 overs between them. There was no match report to tell us how the surface played, but the scorecard says plenty on its own. Twenty wickets fell in 52.4 overs, only one batter in the match passed 21, and Denmark's 120 had been scored at a little over three an over. Qatar's bowlers, with Asim and Owais Ahmed taking five wickets for 37 in 15.2 overs, had done the hard part. Their batters undid it in 98 balls.

Player of the Match: Saif Ahmad

Four days earlier, against Kuwait on this same ground, Saif Ahmad took 5 for 20. Now he has 4 for 31 to go with it, and a hand in five of the ten Qatar wickets: four of his own, including the three in five balls that decided the match, plus the catch that removed Liyanage off Mahmood. He opened the bowling and was still bowling when the last wicket fell, 8.2 overs unbroken. With the bat he had made only 6, and his side had given him just 120 to defend. He made it look like plenty. Mahmood's 4 for 15, six overs with a maiden and a run out thrown in, deserves a mention in the same sentence.

What to Watch

Neither of these sides can reach the top two in Challenge League A, so this was about pride and about momentum into the end of the Nairobi leg, which finishes on October 31. For Denmark, who had lost to Papua New Guinea on Sunday, the win is a reminder that their attack can defend almost anything when Saif Ahmad and Mahmood are on: 172 was enough against Kuwait on Saturday, and 120 was enough here. For Qatar, the lesson is in the contrast between Tuesday and Wednesday. The same openers, the same ground, the same intent at the start, and a 157 for 1 chase one day became 68 all out the next. On this surface, 26 for no wicket after two overs was not a platform; it was a warning.
