Fleming Got Five IPL Titles and Zero National Team Games — Now He's England's Test Coach

Stephen Fleming has coached 252 IPL matches. He has won five titles with Chennai Super Kings. He has guided franchises across four continents — CSK, Joburg Super Kings, Texas Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant. He has been in a dugout longer than most players have been in a dressing room.

He has never coached a national cricket team. Not once. Not for a single match. Not even New Zealand, the country he captained in 111 Tests across 14 years.

And now he is England's Test coach. The most prestigious red-ball coaching job in world cricket has gone to a man whose entire coaching career has been built on 20-over strategy, auction rooms, and impact players. The gap between what Fleming knows and what he's about to face is not a gap — it's a genre shift.

There is something almost comical about the succession. Brendon McCullum — Fleming's former New Zealand opening partner — was sacked as England Test coach in June after losing the Ashes 4-1 and dropping a home series to New Zealand 2-1. His revolutionary 'Bazball' doctrine ended not with a whimper but with a mid-series meltdown: Ben Stokes suspended for breaking curfew, Gus Atkinson in trouble alongside him, the captain retiring at Trent Bridge, and McCullum shown the door days later.

And England's answer? Another New Zealander. Fleming becomes the fifth overseas coach of England's Test team, following Duncan Fletcher, Andy Flower, Trevor Bayliss, and the very man he replaces. The ECB looked at the wreckage McCullum left behind and decided what they really needed was his old mate from Christchurch.

The logic, to be fair, is not absurd. Fleming was one of the sharpest tactical captains of his generation — 80 Tests as New Zealand skipper, 28 wins, a man who squeezed results from squads that had no right to compete. His IPL record at CSK is genuinely extraordinary: five titles, ten finals, twelve playoff appearances in 18 seasons. Shane Watson once called him 'the best coach I've ever worked with.'

Here is the detail that turns the eyebrows into outrage: Fleming won't start until December.

England play Pakistan in a three-Test home series starting August 19. Fleming will not be there. Marcus Trescothick, the batting coach, will serve as interim head coach. Fleming plans to spend the rest of the summer with his family in New Zealand before officially taking charge for the tour of South Africa.

This means Fleming will oversee just a single home Test — against Bangladesh next summer — before the 2027 Ashes. He will have coached England in approximately six Test matches before facing Australia at Edgbaston. That is not a run-up. That is a standing start with no warm-up.

Vaughan's criticism is entirely reasonable and entirely predictable. ESPNcricinfo's analysis called it 'England's wasted summer' — a coaching appointment made too late to matter for the next series, too early to build anything before the one after that. Fleming's late start confirms what everyone suspected: the ECB spent so long searching for the right man that they found him at the wrong time.

But here is the counterargument nobody at the ECB will say out loud: the Pakistan series is expendable. England are not going to win or lose the Ashes based on three home Tests against Pakistan. The real work starts in South Africa in December — four Tests on fast, bouncing pitches against Rabada, Nortje, and Jansen. That is where Fleming's tenure will be defined. If he's going to learn the job, better to do it there than in the goldfish bowl of an August Headingley crowd.

The problem, of course, is that no Test series is expendable when you're 35th in the world rankings and your last permanent coach was sacked for losing too many of them.

Fleming's departure from CSK was not a fairytale ending. After 18 years and five titles, he left a franchise that had missed the IPL playoffs three seasons running. The yellow empire that once felt permanent — Dhoni, Fleming, the Chepauk roar — had crumbled. CSK finished eighth in IPL 2026 with 12 points. Fleming moved to Punjab Kings for 2025, guided them to a runners-up finish, then watched them slide to fifth in 2026.

The franchise world was done with him, or he was done with it. Either way, when the ECB came calling, Fleming said yes to something he'd never tried before: coaching players who couldn't be traded, in matches that last five days, for a country that isn't his own.

The question is whether the skills transfer. Fleming's genius at CSK was structural — squad construction, auction strategy, the management of high-ego superstars across a compressed tournament. Test cricket asks for something different: patience, session-by-session tactics, bowling rotations across 90 overs, declarations, the slow grind of building a first-innings lead on day two of a five-day match. Fleming played 111 Tests. He knows what the format demands. Whether he can coach it is another matter entirely.

While Butcher backed Fleming, he lobbed a grenade at Root's reappointment as captain — calling it 'a retrograde step.'

'Joe was completely wrung out at the end of his time as captain for five years,' Butcher told Sky Sports News. 'The best thing that happened to him and his game was not being captain any more.'

This is the uncomfortable truth nobody at the ECB wants to confront. Root's batting average drops from 53.34 to 46.70 when he's captain. His last stint ended with one win in 17 Tests. He admitted the role was crushing his batting when he stepped down in 2022. And now, at 35, with a new coach who won't even be there for the first series, he's walking back into the same fire.

Fleming and Root have never worked together. They have until December to build a relationship that needs to survive South Africa away, Pakistan away, and a home Ashes — the three assignments that will define both their legacies in English cricket.

Strip away the noise and England's gamble is actually coherent: Fleming is the anti-McCullum. Where Bazball was chaos, aggression, and entertainment-first cricket, Fleming's CSK was built on control, calmness, and an almost boring consistency. Five titles in 18 seasons is not a fluke — it is a system. The ECB is betting that system can translate from Chepauk to Headingley, from the IPL auction to the Ashes.
