Eighty-Five, and Nearly Enough: Sierra Leone Grind Past Ghana on a Lagos Surface That Refused to Give

Ghana batted twenty overs for 85 for 8 and did not hit a boundary outside Jayant Gautam's bat for long stretches. Sierra Leone's reply was almost as difficult — four down, 69 for 4 at the end of the seventeenth — before Lansana Lamin's 14 from 5 balls removed the last of the doubt. Two innings, 171 runs, and a Player of the Match who did his damage in both.

There is a kind of T20 cricket that never appears in a highlights package and tells you far more about a side than a run-fest would. Tafawa Balewa Square produced one on Tuesday afternoon. Ghana won the toss, batted, and spent twenty overs looking for a gap that was not there. Sierra Leone then chased 86 and needed eighteen of their twenty overs to do it.

The margin says six wickets, which makes it sound straightforward. It was not. Sierra Leone were 13 for 2 inside four overs of the chase and still 17 short with three overs to bowl at them. What separated the sides was that Sierra Leone had a batter willing to occupy the crease for 35 balls and a bowling attack in which five different bowlers went at under four an over.

Ghana's Innings — One Batter, and Not Much Else

Ghana lost their first wicket at 11 and never recovered a tempo. Jayant Gautam batted through the top order's difficulties for 42 from 47 — three fours, two sixes, and a good deal of blocking in between — and was involved in the four partnerships that got Ghana past fifty. Judah Solomon made 3 from 12. Richmond Baaleri made 2 from 12. Obed Harvey was run out for 5. Nitesh Hooda was run out for 3. When your No. 3 and No. 4 consume 23 balls for five runs between them in a T20, the innings has already been decided.

Sierra Leone's bowling deserves the credit rather than treating Ghana's 85 as a collapse. Raymond Coker's four overs cost eight runs and included a maiden. Alusine Turay (3-0-10-2) and Abu Kamara (3-0-9-2) took four of the eight wickets between them for 19 runs from six overs. George Sesay and Mohamed Turay each bowled a maiden too. Six bowlers, three maidens, and only three extras conceded in the whole innings.

Joseph Theodore's 15 from 13 at the back end got Ghana from 70 to 85, and in a match that ended with eleven balls unused, those fifteen runs were the difference between a contest and a formality.

The Chase — Slow, Then Finished

Sierra Leone made it hard for themselves. Raymond Coker was run out for a duck off eight balls. Alusine Turay hit a four and a six in a seven-ball 11 and was bowled. Thirteen for 2 in the fourth over, chasing 86, and Ghana were suddenly the side with a game to win.

What followed was a 36-run stand from 55 balls between Abu Kamara and Yegbeh Jalloh that contained almost nothing in the way of boundaries and a great deal of patience. Neither batter tried to force the pace on a surface where forcing the pace had already accounted for four wickets. Kamara made 27 from 35 and fell in the thirteenth over; Jalloh's 19 came from 37 balls and he was out at 69 in the seventeenth, still 17 short.

That is when Lansana Lamin walked in and finished it in five balls — a four, a six, 14 not out, and the 17 runs Sierra Leone needed arrived in seven deliveries. Eric Turay's unbeaten 11 from 18 held the other end. Ghana's Obed Harvey (4-0-16-2) and Philip Yevugah (4-0-10-0) had bowled well enough to deserve a closer finish.

Pitch and Conditions

Tafawa Balewa Square has been the defining character of this series. Nigeria A defended 113 for 8 against Sierra Leone here on Monday, bowling them out for 80; Nigeria squeezed Ghana to 91 for 9 later the same day before chasing it down in thirteen overs; and Nigeria A made 139 against the senior side in the evening game that followed this one. Nothing on this ground has come easily, and nothing has come fast.

The signature is a slow surface with enough grip to make length bowling genuinely difficult to score off, plus a short-boundary temptation that has cost more wickets than it has provided runs. Both innings in this match had long passages where the only realistic scoring option was a single. Ghana's 85 came off 120 balls; Sierra Leone's 86 off 109. Five fours and two sixes in Ghana's innings, three and three in Sierra Leone's, and a match total across both sides of 171.

Abu Kamara's Day

The match award went to Abu Kamara, and it is one of the cleaner Player-of-the-Match cases you will see. He bowled three overs for nine runs and took two wickets, which on this surface was the spell that stopped Ghana from reaching a hundred. Then he top-scored in the chase with 27 from 35 balls in an innings that was almost entirely devoid of flourish and entirely essential.

There is something honest about a Player of the Match who strikes at 77 in a T20. On a pitch like this, restraint is a skill, and Kamara had more of it than anyone else in the ground.

The CricIntel Prediction Review

This match didn't have a CricIntel preview — we previewed Nigeria's fixtures in this series but not the Ghana–Sierra Leone game. We won't invent a call we didn't make.

The one read we have carried through our coverage of this series is that Tafawa Balewa Square is a bowling ground where 90 defends, and that has now held across four matches. Every preview we write for the remaining fixtures will be built on that assumption rather than on a T20 par score borrowed from anywhere else.

What to Watch Next

Sierra Leone's tournament had begun with a 33-run defeat to Nigeria A on Monday, bowled out for 80, so this is their first win of the series and a useful one — achieved with the ball first and the nerve second. Alusine Turay's ability to contribute in both disciplines and Lansana Lamin's finishing give them two things Ghana currently do not have.

Ghana have now lost twice in two days on the same ground, for 91 for 9 and 85 for 8. The template is clear and so is the problem: Jayant Gautam and Judah Solomon are batting long enough, but nobody is scoring quickly enough to make their occupation worth anything. Joseph Theodore's 15 from 13 was the only innings in either Ghana performance that beat a run a ball by a meaningful margin.

Sierra Leone face Nigeria next, on September 23 at the same venue; Ghana meet Nigeria A in the day's other fixture.
