MI swap their captain for a fast bowler, and it's the smartest move they've made
Hardik Pandya won 15 of 39 games as Mumbai Indians captain. Now he goes to Punjab Kings for Arshdeep Singh, and 'Hardik is happy to play under Shreyas Iyer'. That line tells you most of the story.
The trade nobody at Wankhede will mourn
Two years ago Mumbai Indians sacked Rohit Sharma as captain to bring Hardik Pandya home. On Saturday they agreed to send Hardik to Punjab Kings. In return they get Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm quick who has spent his whole IPL career in Punjab.
Cricinfo reported that both franchises have lodged an expression of interest with the IPL. Written consent from the players is expected within 24 hours, and then the IPL has to ratify the deal. PTI went further, quoting an IPL source who said the trade "has been completed".
Either way, the IPL 2027 trade window now has its biggest deal. It is bigger than CSK's Livingstone trade earlier this week, and it is a lot more honest about what went wrong.
The trade has been completed. Hardik is going to Punjab Kings and Arshdeep is moving to Mumbai Indians. Hardik is happy to play under Shreyas Iyer.IPL source, speaking to PTI, November 7, 2026
The trade in numbers
| Hardik as MI captain (2024–26) | 39 games: 15 won, 24 lost |
| MI win-loss ratio under Hardik | 0.625, the worst for any IPL captain (min. 30 games) |
| Hardik as GT captain (2022–23) | 31 games: 22 won, 9 lost (ratio 2.444) |
| MI finishes under Hardik | 10th (2024), playoffs (2025), 9th (2026) |
| Arshdeep for PBKS (2019–26) | 111 wickets in 96 games, economy 9.18 |
| 2025 mega-auction fees | Hardik ₹16.35 crore (MI retention), Arshdeep ₹18 crore (PBKS RTM) |
| Hardik's last competitive game | May 24, 2026 (IPL, for MI) |
| Retention deadline / auction | November 17 / December 16, Goa |
The Gujarat captain never came back
The two records in that table look like they belong to two different captains. At Gujarat Titans, Hardik won 22 of 31 games and lifted the trophy in their first season. Only Rajat Patidar at RCB has a better ratio, and only just.
At Mumbai he won 15 of 39. That is the worst ratio of any IPL captain with 30 or more games. A last-place finish in 2024 came with the crowd booing him at his own ground. MI made the playoffs in 2025 and then finished ninth in 2026.
The bowling suffered too. Hardik spent most of the time since the 2026 IPL at the BCCI Centre of Excellence with back spasms, a leg strain and then a fresh shin injury. On Friday Baroda left him out of their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squad. He has not played a competitive game since May 24.
Cricinfo reports that Hardik is the one who asked to be released. MI then spoke to every franchise except RCB. They were not shopping a captain. They were shopping a problem.
It was the decision of the captain and the coach to trade Hardik for Arshdeep... For the owners, it was not an easy decision considering how Arshdeep has risen and performed so well for the franchise.IPL source on the Punjab Kings side, speaking to PTI
MI: Bumrah finally gets a partner
MI's real problem in 2026 was the other end. Trent Boult cost ₹12.5 crore at the 2025 auction and played five games last season. Bumrah was bowling with very little help.
Arshdeep fixes that. He bowls in all three phases like Bumrah, but from the left-arm angle. He was also India's death bowler in the 2024 T20 World Cup win. His IPL economy of 9.18 looks high, but most of those overs came at the death on Mohali and Mullanpur pitches that suit batters. He was also Player of the Match in his last IPL game at the Wankhede.
With Bumrah and Arshdeep, MI have the best Indian new-ball pair in the league. That also leaves Boult as an easy release before November 17, which frees up ₹12.5 crore and an overseas slot for Goa.
There is a new set-up around them too. Kieron Pollard is head coach, with Robin Uthappa, Mitchell McClenaghan and T Dilip on the staff. Nobody has named the new captain yet. Suryakumar Yadav and Bumrah are the obvious candidates. Rohit is still in that dressing room, and he will have noticed.
PBKS: a gamble on a body that won't hold up
Punjab are making a bet that looks bold now and could look either brilliant or reckless by April. Shreyas Iyer took them to the 2025 final, so they have no need for Hardik the captain. They want the player who, when fit, bats at No. 6, bowls four overs and fields at backward point.
"When fit" is the catch. Hardik has been injured all year. Gautam Gambhir has already said he will not take Hardik or Bumrah to the 2027 ODI World Cup "half-cooked". PBKS are giving up a homegrown, 27-year-old match-winner for a 33-year-old allrounder who has not bowled a competitive ball since May.
Without Arshdeep, Yash Thakur and Vijaykumar Vyshak are the senior Indian seamers in Punjab's squad. That attack is thin. Expect PBKS to spend heavily on a fast bowler at the December auction.
CricIntel verdict
MI win this trade, and it isn't close. They get rid of a captaincy that never worked, and they get the Indian quick they badly needed.
PBKS win only if Hardik's body lets him bowl. If it does, a fit Hardik batting under a captain who already has the job could be the best version of him since 2022. If it doesn't, Punjab have traded their most loyal match-winner for an expensive specialist batter.
Either way, MI have finally admitted that the 2024 decision to replace Rohit with Hardik did not work.
