Kuwait: Bhavsar Holds It, Anto Breaks It Open

Kuwait chose to bowl and had Jersey 77 for 4 in the 15th over, with four different bowlers sharing those wickets. Jersey recovered through the middle overs, and that is where Meet Bhavsar earned his figures. He bowled Asa Tribe and had Charlie Brennan stumped by Anto to break the recovery, then came back to bowl the 50th over and took three wickets in four balls: Scott van Breda caught and bowled with the score on 223, then Jake Dunford and George Richardson both bowled. Jersey had added 55 for the eighth wicket and lost their last three for one run.

The chase was never complicated. Ravija Sandaruwan hit 18 off 9 before falling in the third over, and from 25 for 1 Anto and Bhavsar added 158 off 137 balls. Anto hit 13 fours and six sixes; Bhavsar's 44 off 69 was the steady half of the partnership, and exactly what it needed. Both fell to Benjamin Ward within seven balls of each other, but at 186 for 3 Kuwait needed 39, and Bilal Tahir and Mohammed Aslam saw them home without fuss.

Jersey: Recoveries That Kept Running Out

Jersey's innings was a series of starts. Harrison Carlyon hit six fours in a 23-ball 29, but none of Josh Lawrenson, Zak Tribe or Jonty Jenner got past 15, and Jersey were 77 for 4 in the 15th over. The partnership between Asa Tribe (33) and Charlie Brennan (43, with two sixes) added 61 off 84 balls and took them to 138 for 4, but both fell within 15 balls of each other. Benjamin Ward's 18 took 46 balls, and the pace of the middle overs left too much for the end.

Scott van Breda and Jake Dunford tried to make up for it, adding 55 off 47 balls, and van Breda was still there when the 50th over began. Then the last over went to Bhavsar. With the ball, Ward was Jersey's best, conceding 35 in eight overs and taking both Anto and Bhavsar. On a different day those wickets would have come 100 runs earlier.

Pitch & Conditions

The Ruaraka surface rewarded bowlers who attacked the stumps. Bhavsar's five wickets included three bowled and a stumping, and Jersey managed fewer than four and a half an over across their 50. Batting second looked a good deal easier: Kuwait scored at better than six and a half an over in reply. The toss mattered less than the partnership, as it often does when one batter gets in and stays in.

Player of the Match: Clinto Anto

The numbers are 113 off 77 balls, with 13 fours and six sixes, and a stumping behind the stumps earlier in the day. What stands out is how quickly he took a chase of 225 out of Jersey's hands. After Sandaruwan fell in the third over, Anto made a target that should have taken 50 overs look like a 30-over job. He was out in the 25th over with the scoreboard reading 183 for 2 and only 42 still needed; the rest was a formality. Bhavsar might feel unlucky not to share the award. Anto made sure there was no argument.

What to Watch

Kuwait have found a combination that works: a wicketkeeper-opener who can take the game away, and a number three who can bowl a side out and then hold an innings together. For Jersey, the lesson is about converting starts. Seven of their batters reached double figures and none reached 50. In a 50-over game, that adds up to 224, and 224 was not enough.
