Lumbini Lions Beat Janakpur Bolts by 16 Runs — Four Wickets for Three Runs Settle a Low-Scoring Kirtipur Morning
Lumbini Lions lost D'Arcy Short to the first ball of the match and still found 149 for 8, Rohit Paudel making 38 off 31. Janakpur Bolts were 53 for 2 in the ninth over, then lost four wickets for three runs. Harmeet Singh and Aaditya Mahata added 43 off 29 balls late on, but 133 for 8 left them 16 short.
Some totals look short at the halfway mark and turn out to be plenty. Janakpur Bolts won the toss, chose to field, and had D'Arcy Short caught off the very first ball of the match. Lumbini Lions never quite broke free after that, but nobody failed completely either, and Rohit Paudel's 38 off 31 was the spine of a 149 for 8.
Janakpur were well placed at 53 for 2 in the ninth over. Twelve balls later they were 56 for 6. A late stand of 43 between Harmeet Singh and Aaditya Mahata made it respectable, not close enough. Lumbini Lions won by 16 runs, their third win in four games, and they are still unbeaten.

Losing an opener to the first ball can rattle a side. Lumbini simply rebuilt. Aasif Sheikh and Niroshan Dickwella added 43 off 40 balls before Sheikh was lbw to Harmeet Singh in the seventh over, and Dickwella went soon after for 27, leaving them 50 for 3 at drinks. The powerplay brought 39 for 1. It was steady, not fast.
Paudel held the middle together. He hit four fours and a six in his 38, added 37 with Dilip Nath, who struck two sixes in his 21 off 15, and was fifth out at 117 in the 18th over. The finish was brisk. Ruben Trumpelmann hit two sixes in 15 off 8 and Sundeep Jora took two fours in 9 off 4, and Lumbini scored 32 from their last 16 balls. That late surge proved to be worth more than the margin of victory.
With the ball, D'Arcy Short was the man who turned the game. He bowled Trit Raj Das to end a 36-run stand, had Saif Hassan lbw, and then had Abhisekh Tiwari caught by Nath. In between, Tilak Bhandari bowled two overs for five runs and took two wickets, Anil Sah bowled and Bishal Shusling caught by Jora. Sher Malla then had James Neesham stumped by Dickwella and later bowled Harmeet Singh, which was the wicket Janakpur could least afford to lose.
Janakpur did well to keep Lumbini under 150, and for an hour of the chase it looked as if that would be enough. Parvez Hossain Emon fell lbw to Trumpelmann in the second over, but Das and Saif Hassan took them to 42 for 1 and the powerplay ended on 40 for 1, a touch ahead of Lumbini at the same stage. Saif played the best of their top-order innings, 28 off 25 with four fours.
Then it all went at once. Saif was lbw to Short at 53 in the ninth over, and in the next twelve balls Sah, Shusling and Tiwari followed. From 53 for 2 the Bolts were 56 for 6. Neesham, who might have been the man to steady it, made 9 off 11 before he was stumped at 65.
Harmeet Singh and Aaditya Mahata gave the innings its second life. Harmeet hit three sixes in 33 off 20 and Mahata hit four in his unbeaten 30 off 24, without a single four. They added 43 off 29 balls before Malla bowled Harmeet at 108 in the 18th over. Janakpur needed 42 from the last 14 balls by then, and managed 25. Earlier, Harmeet had also taken 1 for 25 with the ball and Shusling 2 for 21, so the effort was there. It was the middle of the chase that cost them.
Our preview said the morning slot at Kirtipur historically favours batting and that a side batting first might look for 165 or more. This game did not play that way. Neither side reached 150, both powerplays ended on around 40 for 1, and Lumbini's six bowlers went at under seven and a half an over between them. The scorecard cannot tell us how much was surface and how much was bowling, but the numbers suggest a pitch on which batters had to work for their runs, and on which 149 was a good total rather than a modest one.
Short's three wickets would have been a fair choice, but the award went to the captain, and it is easy to see why. Paudel came in at 43 for 2 and left at 117 for 5, the top score of the match in a game where runs were hard to find. Then he bowled his full four overs for 18 without taking a wicket, the most economical full spell on either side. He did not have a dramatic day. He had a complete one, and in a game decided by 16 runs, that was the difference.
Our preview did not make a formal pick. It described Lumbini as one of the more consistent sides in the NPL, with a disciplined bowling unit, and said Janakpur had blown hot and cold and needed a spark. That reading held up: Lumbini's bowlers squeezed the chase, and Janakpur's collapse of four wickets for three runs was exactly the kind of inconsistency we had in mind. Where we were wrong was the pitch. We expected batting to be easy in the morning slot and set 165 as a target to aim for. Lumbini won with 149, and Janakpur did not get within 16 of it.
Lumbini Lions now have seven points from four games, three wins and no defeats, and a net run rate of +2.789. They are three points clear at the top. Their next fixture is against Kathmandu Gorkhas at Kirtipur on November 7. Janakpur Bolts have four points from five games, two wins and three defeats, and a net run rate of -0.083. They are level on points with four other sides, and having played more games than most of them, they have less room to make up ground.
