₹27 crore, a brand new start, and the one opponent who knows every trick in his book. Rishabh Pant's first IPL match against Delhi Capitals is appointment viewing.

Why This Match Matters

Seven seasons. 2,838 runs. Countless memories at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. And now, for the first time in his IPL career, Rishabh Pant walks out in opposition colours against Delhi Capitals. This is Match 5 of IPL 2026 — and already one of the most charged fixtures of the season.

Pant was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore at the 2025 mega auction, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. The expectations are enormous. Captaining LSG for the first time in a competitive match — and doing it against the franchise that made him — is about as dramatic an opening act as you could script.

On the other side stands Axar Patel, Pant's former teammate, now captaining Delhi Capitals in what is effectively a new era for the franchise. DC have never won the IPL title despite years of promise. Axar has inherited a squad with genuine depth and a point to prove. Both teams are playing their season openers — for both, there is absolutely no margin for complacency.

Lucknow Super Giants — The Pant Project Begins

Lucknow have not reached the IPL playoffs since 2023. They finished seventh in both 2024 and 2025 — a damning record that prompted a sweeping overhaul. Enter Pant, Justin Langer as head coach, and a squad rebuilt around pace, power, and personality.

The batting order has real firepower. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram are expected to open, providing a balance of brutality and craft. Nicholas Pooran behind the stumps adds another destructive dimension in the middle order, flanked by Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad. The pace attack — anchored by Anrich Nortje and the electric Mayank Yadav — is capable of unsettling any top order in world cricket.

The injury concerns are real, though. Josh Inglis is confirmed absent for the early phase of the season, and Wanindu Hasaranga — LSG's key spin-bowling overseas option — is doubtful due to a hamstring problem. The pace unit also carries some fragility given the collective injury histories involved. How LSG manage their overseas balance in this first game could define their template for the season.

Delhi Capitals — Axar's Era Starts Here

Delhi Capitals arrive at Ekana having overhauled their leadership structure and their identity. Axar Patel captains for the first time in a league match, and the squad around him is arguably the most complete DC have assembled in years. The additions of David Miller — a world-class finisher — and Ben Duckett add international pedigree to an already solid batting group.

KL Rahul brings consistency and experience to the top order; he became the fastest batter to 5,000 IPL runs last season and will be hungry to extend that record further. In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav is the headline act — and the slow, spin-friendly surface at Ekana is exactly the kind of venue that brings out the best in him.

The notable absence is Mitchell Starc, who has been ruled out of the early matches due to a shoulder and elbow injury. It's a significant blow — Starc was a marquee signing and DC built their pace plans around him. Lungi Ngidi and Dushmantha Chameera will need to shoulder more than expected. DC hold the head-to-head advantage over LSG (4-3) and won both meetings in 2025 — the away form travels well.

Head-to-Head (IPL)

Total IPL Meetings 7
Delhi Capitals Wins 4
Lucknow Super Giants Wins 3
Last Meeting (IPL 2025) Delhi Capitals won — DC chased with 13 balls to spare

DC have the edge — four wins to LSG's three — and they won both meetings in 2025. The most recent clash saw Delhi chase down LSG's total with ease, a performance that will be front of mind for both camps heading into this one. LSG will want a different story at home.

Venue & Conditions — Ekana Under the Lights

The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow is one of the more intriguing venues on the IPL circuit. The pitch tends to be slower and more balanced than the typical T20 surface — it offers grip and turn for spinners as the match progresses, and the longest straight boundaries of any Indian international venue (81 metres) means clean hitting is rewarded but sixes straight down the ground are genuinely difficult to clear.

Historically, Ekana has been kinder to chasing teams. Of the IPL matches played here, teams batting second have had a clear advantage — and with this being a 7:30 PM IST fixture, dew will almost certainly play a role in the back half of the game. The surface becomes progressively easier to bat on as the evening wears on, which makes the toss and innings order a significant strategic consideration.

For spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, the conditions in the first innings could be close to ideal. For LSG's pace attack, the powerplay phase — before dew sets in and before the pitch flattens — is their window to make an impact.

CricIntel Verdict

The storyline writes itself: Pant against his past. But strip away the narrative and this is a competitive match between two sides with significant question marks heading into their respective openers. LSG's injury list at key overseas positions, and DC's absence of their marquee pace bowler, mean both teams are slightly short of full strength.

We lean toward Delhi Capitals here. They hold the head-to-head advantage, won convincingly in their last meeting, and carry a batting line-up — KL Rahul, Miller, Axar — built for all conditions. Kuldeep Yadav on a spin-friendly Ekana surface in the first innings is a genuine match-winning proposition. And DC have proven they can execute plans under pressure.

The player we're watching most closely from LSG: Rishabh Pant himself. Everything flows through him. If he comes to the crease with his team under pressure and counter-attacks in the way only he can, this match can be turned on its head. From DC's side: Kuldeep Yadav. If he finds early rhythm on a surface that gives him purchase, LSG's middle order could find the going very tough indeed.
