There is a particular kind of afternoon at the start of a tour when one side knows exactly what it wants to do and the other is still finding out what this level of cricket asks of you. The Complejo Municipal de Beisbol in Texcoco de Mora, a baseball ground lending itself to a different game for the weekend, hosted one of those. Mexico Women chose to field, and Argentina Women batted as though the boundary rope were something to be reached rather than respected: 260 for 5 in their twenty overs, with Maria Castineiras making 87 off 46 balls.

Mexico Women were bowled out for 37 in 11.4 overs. Argentina Women won by 223 runs and lead the three-match series 1-0, with the second T20I to follow later the same day on the same ground.

Argentina: An Opening Stand That Set the Day

The first eleven overs belonged to Castineiras and Lehmann. Their stand of 145 off 73 balls was built on Castineiras hitting sixteen fours and two sixes, and it ended in a strange little flurry: Castineiras stumped by Jennifer Pastrana off Anna Septien with the last ball of the 11th over, and Lehmann (39 off 28) bowled by Tania Salcedo with the first ball of the 12th. Two wickets in two balls, 145 for 2, and an invitation for Argentina to slow down. They declined it. Julieta Cullen (41 off 20) and Albertina Galan (36 off 22) added 77 off 38 balls, and Constanza Sosa's unbeaten 16 off 8 took the total to 260.

With the ball, Argentina used six bowlers and every one of them took a wicket. Maria Mastrangelo opened with a maiden among her two overs and had Salcedo caught by Castineiras in the first over; Lehmann bowled Septien in the second. Francesca Galan's two overs cost just three runs for two wickets, Alina Emch took 2 for 8, and Albertina Galan ran out two batters from the field. It was thorough work rather than spectacular, which is exactly what a side protecting 260 should want.

Mexico: What There Is to Build On

Two wickets down with no runs on the board, and a target of 261 to chase: in truth the result was settled before the fourth over. But there were things in Mexico's day worth keeping. Pastrana's glovework was sharp, with three stumpings off Castineiras, Cullen and Albertina Galan, all batters who had been advancing down the pitch, and she also hit the only boundary of Mexico's innings in her 7 off 8. Gabriela Gaby (6 off 16) and Zitlalli Hernandez (3 off 20) faced 36 balls between them, and learning to stay in is the first skill a developing batting side has to acquire before the runs come.

Salcedo's 1 for 37 from four overs was the most economical spell on a day when 260 were scored, and Septien's two wickets were the two biggest, Castineiras and Cullen. The thing most within Mexico's control is the extras column: 32 in Argentina's innings, including thirteen no-balls across the five bowlers. That is a fixable problem, and fixing it is the quickest way to make the next game closer.

What to Watch

The second T20I follows later the same day at the same ground, so there is no time for either side to dwell on this one. For Mexico, the first target is simple: get through the opening overs with wickets in hand and give the middle order a platform. For Argentina, the question is whether the openers can do it again. A 2-0 lead would decide the series with a game to spare.
