Kohli's Seat Is Empty — Morkel Has Three Candidates and Zero Favourite
India's bowling coach just turned the Afghanistan ODI series into a casting call. Three batters, one legendary batting position, and Morkel isn't picking sides.
The Audition Nobody Expected This Soon
Virat Kohli's hamstring gave way during his match-winning 75 not out in the IPL 2026 final. Hardik Pandya's quadriceps snapped during his fitness test two days later. And suddenly, the Afghanistan ODI series — three matches against the 12th-ranked side — became something far more interesting than it had any right to be.
At his pre-match press conference in Dharamsala, India bowling coach Morne Morkel didn't try to hide what's happening. He opened the casting call. No. 3 — the position Kohli has owned for the better part of a decade — is up for grabs.
"I think that's something that in this series we'll play around with, whether it's Ishan or KL or Yashasvi," Morkel said. "We have got a couple of one-day games coming up, and we'll give guys an opportunity in different slots to give ourselves a better idea of how we can structure teams and have different options."
Translation: India is going to use three ODIs against Afghanistan as an open audition for the most pressure-laden batting spot in world cricket. And 2027 is the deadline.
Obviously a big miss, with Virat. He is one of the senior players in the team. The way he goes about his innings in that middle phase especially is something we'll miss.Morne Morkel on Kohli's absence
The Three Candidates — and What They Actually Offer
Let's be honest: none of these three is Virat Kohli. But each brings something distinct to the No. 3 conversation, and Morkel's refusal to name a frontrunner suggests the think-tank genuinely doesn't know who fits best.
Ishan Kishan is the comeback story. The left-hander hasn't played an ODI since October 2023 — against Afghanistan, of all teams — after his BCCI central contract was revoked. He clawed his way back through T20Is and now averages 42.40 across 27 ODIs with a high score of 210. His natural attacking intent makes him a wildcard at one-drop, but that same aggression is why selectors have always struggled to pin him down.
KL Rahul has the temperament but owns the No. 5 slot. Moving him to No. 3 disrupts two positions — and Rahul's recent ODI returns have come precisely because he bats deep, not early. Morkel including him in the conversation suggests India are willing to blow up their middle order to find the right top-three combination.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is the most talented of the three but the worst fit at No. 3. He's a natural opener, and his explosive game — built on fearless strokeplay in the powerplay — could be neutered by asking him to come in at 15-1 and stabilise. Still, the kid is 24 and already has more shots than most players collect in a career.
The No. 3 Audition — Career ODI Numbers
| Player | ODIs | Average | High Score |
| Ishan Kishan | 27 | 42.40 | 210 |
| KL Rahul | 59 | 46.32 | 111 |
| Yashasvi Jaiswal | 9 | 33.44 | 89 |
| Virat Kohli (for comparison) | 295 | 58.18 | 183 |
The Pace Attack Nobody Recognises
While the No. 3 audition grabbed the headlines, the quieter story might be bigger. With Jasprit Bumrah rested and Mohammed Siraj not selected, India's pace attack against Afghanistan could feature two players who have never worn the India cap.
Prince Yadav — 29 List A wickets at 20.31 — and Gurnoor Brar — 52 first-class wickets at 27.30 — are the new names in the squad. And Morkel, the man who took 544 international wickets himself, is already impressed.
First impressions, it is almost like they've been part of the squad for five years. I saw no nervousness on their face. The way they've gone about training, the energy they've trained with, was good to see.Morkel on Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar
Rohit Is Fine. The Real Question Is Whether India Can Be.
The good news: Rohit Sharma has passed all fitness tests. The thigh pad that triggered social media panic during training was precautionary, nothing more. "I don't think there's any issue," Morkel said. "He's passed all his fitness tests. He's cleared and ready to go."
But here's the uncomfortable truth that Morkel's reassurance can't cover: India are about to start their 2027 World Cup preparation cycle with their two biggest match-winners — Kohli and Pandya — injured, their first-choice pace attack rested, and three batters auditioning for a role none of them has proven they can own.
Afghanistan at home is the gentlest possible start. Rashid Khan, Gurbaz, and Omarzai will make it competitive, but India should still win. The real test is whether this series produces answers — or just confirms that the No. 3 question has no clean solution without Kohli.
The audition starts in Dharamsala. Three candidates, one seat, and the clock already ticking toward South Africa 2027.
