One Partnership, One Hundred and Thirty-One: Hong Kong Beat Oman by Nine Wickets With Thirty Overs Unused

Third-place play-offs are the orphans of tournament cricket. Nobody schedules their afternoon around them, and the teams playing in them have spent the previous forty-eight hours absorbing a semi-final defeat. Hong Kong treated this one as though it were worth something, and Oman, quite visibly, did not.

Nine wickets, 181 balls to spare. Oman have now been dismissed for 60 and 144 in their last two innings of this tournament, and the second of those took a 99-ball fifty from a number seven to reach.

Oman lost Jatinder Singh, Mujibur Ali, Karan Sonavale, Hammad Mirza and Jiten Ramanandi for 45. Between them: 34 runs from 44 balls. Nasrulla Rana did most of the damage with 4 for 26 from nine overs, one of which was a maiden — a spell of genuine control in which he never looked like being driven and never bowled anything a batter could leave.

From 45 for 5, Sanju Sajeev and Vinayak Shukla stopped the bleeding, and Sajeev then batted on and on. Fifty-nine from 99 balls is not an innings anyone will put on a highlights reel, but it doubled the total and it was, by a distance, the most competent batting Oman produced. The tail then gave itself away: Aizaz Khan's figures of 4.1-1-3-2 to finish the innings are almost comic.

The concern for Oman is not one bad day. It is that in consecutive matches — the semi-final against Nepal and this — they have been bowled out for 60 and 144, and on both occasions the collapse came in the first fifteen overs against seam.

Hong Kong's reply needed 145 and they made it look like a net session. Zeeshan Ali and Anshy Rath put on 131 in 113 balls — eight fours for Zeeshan, three sixes for Rath — and the only wicket to fall came with 14 needed. Babar Hayat then hit 14 from five balls, presumably because he could.

Rath finished 68 not out from 60 and has been the most reliable batter in this Hong Kong side all tournament. There is a version of this match in which Hong Kong, having lost a semi-final by seven wickets in 11.1 overs, arrive flat and go through the motions. They did the opposite, which tells you something about the dressing room.

Bangi offered early seam movement and then settled quickly — the contrast between Oman's 45 for 5 and Hong Kong's 131 for 0 is more about the twenty overs between them than about two different pitches. The ball stopped doing anything meaningful after the first ten, which makes Oman's decision-making in that window the whole match. Once it was flat, 145 was never a total.

Nine overs, one maiden, 26 runs, four wickets. Rana bowled a fuller length than the conditions strictly demanded and was rewarded for it — he attacked the stumps in a format and a venue where most seamers retreat to back-of-a-length safety. Four of the first five Oman wickets fell with the ball still hard, and at 45 for 5 the match was decided.

It is worth saying plainly: an associate seamer taking 4 for 26 in nine overs in a knockout match is a performance that would draw attention anywhere. It happened at a ground most of the cricket world has never heard of, on a day nobody was watching.

Hong Kong finish third having beaten Nepal in the group stage and Oman twice in a week, and they leave with Anshy Rath, Zeeshan Ali and a seam attack that has taken 20-wicket hauls out of two of the last three matches. That is a functioning cricket team.

Oman finish fourth with a top order that has to be rebuilt or retrained. Sanju Sajeev at seven is currently their most dependable batter, which is not a sustainable way to organise an innings.
