Some ODIs are decided by a big hundred or a burst of fast bowling. This one was decided by twenty overs of finger spin that never let Oman breathe. Colin Ackermann and Aryan Dutt bowled their full allocations for 45 runs and five wickets between them, Oman were bowled out for 182, and Netherlands chased it down in 36 overs at the ICC Academy Ground.

Netherlands: A Squeeze, Then a Stand

Netherlands chose to bowl, and the decision looked sound by the 16th over. Oman had 40 without loss when Ackermann bowled Jeet Shah, Dutt bowled Jatinder Singh in the next over, and Aryan Bisht fell to Ackermann at 51 for 3. Three wickets for 11 runs in under six overs, and the innings never quite recovered its tempo. Ackermann came back to take Karan Sonavale and Nadeem Khan, and Kyle Klein mopped up the last two.

The chase had one hiccup at the start, when Max O'Dowd went for a brisk 29 at 39 for 1, and then none at all for a long time. De Lange and Lion-Cachet added 140 off 164 balls, and they did it without fuss: de Lange hit eight fours in his 79, Lion-Cachet six in his 68. The only blemish came right at the end, when both were run out with Shukla behind the stumps involved each time, and 179 for 1 became 182 for 3. Scott Edwards and Ackermann were there to see it home.

Oman: The Partnership That Needed Company

Oman's best passage was the fifth-wicket stand of 58 between Mujibur Ali and Vinayak Shukla. Mujibur made 44 off 78, Shukla 38 off 50 with the only six of the innings, and at 138 for 4 in the 39th over a total around 220 was still in sight. Then Klaassen had Shukla caught, Shariz Ahmad stumped Mujibur, and the last six wickets went for 44. Defending 182 needed early wickets, and Nadeem Khan's removal of O'Dowd was the only one Oman managed until the runs were all but done.

Pitch and Conditions

The scorecard tells you the pitch rewarded slower bowlers who hit a length. Netherlands' spinners, Ackermann, Dutt and Shariz Ahmad, sent down 29 overs for 89 runs and seven wickets. Oman scored at 3.7 an over across almost a full innings, and Netherlands at just over five, which is a fair measure of how much easier it became once the ball was a little older and the batters were set.

Player of the Match: Colin Ackermann

Ten overs, one maiden, 23 runs, four wickets. Ackermann bowled two of his four, struck at both ends of the innings and gave Oman nothing to hit in between. It is the kind of spell that does not make the highlights reel and wins the match anyway. He finished the day not out on 1, there when the winning runs came.

CricIntel Prediction Review

Our preview did not pick a winner. It gave Oman the edge of the venue and called the middle-overs spin battle the likely decider, and the second half of that was right, only it was Netherlands' spinners who won it. The home-ground advantage counted for little. We should also be honest about two other things: the Oman players the preview leaned on, Bilal Khan, Aqib Ilyas and Zeeshan Maqsood, did not play, and the preview overstated the table. Netherlands were third, not top, and only the top three in League 2 go straight to the 2027 Qualifier.

What's Next

Netherlands have finished their 36 matches in third place on 44 points, behind USA (49) and Scotland (45), and no one below them can reach that total. Oman stay fourth on 33 points with one match left, level on points with Namibia, who have finished their programme, and ahead on net run rate (-0.202 to -0.278).
