Zak Tribe and Josh Lawrenson added 165 for the third wicket, and Jonty Jenner then hit 72 from 23 balls to take Jersey to 347 for 5. Benjamin Ward's five wickets reduced Papua New Guinea from 76 for 2 to 94 for 7, and they were all out for 175.

Jersey chose to bat, and for the first half of the innings they were patient rather than spectacular. They were 58 for 2 in the 14th over, and Papua New Guinea had kept things tight. What followed was a lesson in how a 50-over innings is built: Zak Tribe and Josh Lawrenson added 165 for the third wicket, and once that platform was in place, Jonty Jenner arrived and changed the game's tempo completely.

From 223 for 3 after 42 overs, Jersey made 124 in the last eight and finished on 347 for 5. Papua New Guinea reached 49 for 1, but Benjamin Ward took five wickets in a burst through the middle order, and they were bowled out for 175 in 36.5 overs. Jersey won by 172 runs.

Jersey: Patience First, Then Power

Harrison Carlyon fell in the fourth over with 21 on the board, and Asa Tribe made 23 before he was bowled by Aue Oru with the score on 58. At that point Jersey's run rate was a little over four an over. Lawrenson and Zak Tribe did not try to change that in a hurry. Lawrenson's 72 came from 95 balls, an anchoring innings, and the pair batted from the 14th over to the end of the 42nd. That is the partnership that made everything else possible.

Then came Jenner. His 72 came off 23 balls with nine sixes and two fours, and he and Tribe added 112 for the fourth wicket in 40 balls. Of Jenner's 72, 62 came in boundaries. Charlie Brennan and Julius Sumerauer were there at the end as Jersey finished on 347 for 5, with 15 sixes in the innings.

The bowling was just as clinical. Carlyon struck in the first over of the chase, and after Sese Bau and Lega Siaka had taken Papua New Guinea to 49, George Richardson bowled Bau. Then Ward took over. His 10 overs for 49 brought five wickets — Siaka, Patrick Nou, Assad Vala, Boio Ray and Tony Ura — and Charles Perchard's eight overs cost only 22 for two wickets. Lawrenson, having anchored the innings, finished the match by trapping Kabua Morea lbw.

Papua New Guinea: A Fightback Too Late

For 40 overs, Papua New Guinea's attack had kept the game within reach. Assad Vala's eight overs cost only 31, and Kabua Morea's 10 went for 56 with a maiden. But the last eight overs undid that work: Alei Nao (2/75) and Aue Oru (2/70) both took two wickets, and John Kariko's 10 overs cost 77.

The chase began well after Doko Rupa fell for a duck in the first over. Siaka's 39 from 49 balls was a steady effort, but from 76 for 2 Papua New Guinea lost five wickets for 18 runs and were 94 for 7 in the 24th over. There was resistance at the end: Morea hit 40 from 35 balls with three sixes and Nao made 32, and the pair added 64 for the ninth wicket. It was a reminder of what this side can do, even if the result had been settled long before.

Conditions

The scores tell their own story. Jersey's 347 shows that runs were there for batters who stayed in, and the 165-run third-wicket partnership suggests that set batters could score freely. Papua New Guinea's collapse came against disciplined bowling rather than anything the scorecard can put down to the surface.

Player of the Match: Zak Tribe

Tribe's 150 came from 129 balls, with 11 fours and five sixes, and the shape of it was as impressive as the number. He came in at 58 for 2 in the 14th over, batted through the partnership with Lawrenson, and was still there in the 50th over, when he was caught off Oru with the score on 339. In those 36 overs he played two quite different roles.

Through the middle overs, alongside Lawrenson, he built. In the last eight overs, with Jenner hitting sixes at the other end, he kept the strike moving and kept scoring himself. Big hundreds in 50-over cricket are usually about judgement as much as hitting, and Tribe's was full of good judgement.

What's Next
