Qatar Beat Papua New Guinea by 9 Wickets — Muhammad Asim's 5 for 34, Then Shahzeb Afridi's Nine Sixes
Papua New Guinea were 86 without loss in Nairobi and were bowled out for 155. Muhammad Asim took 5 for 34, and Shahzeb Afridi's 85 off 35 balls finished the chase in 14.5 overs, with 211 balls to spare.
At 86 for no wicket in the 15th over, Papua New Guinea had chosen to bat and the decision looked right. Tony Ura had 52 off 44 balls and Sese Bau was keeping him company. Seven wickets later the score was 132, and by the 37th over PNG had been bowled out for 155. Muhammad Asim, with 5 for 34 in ten overs, was at the centre of it.
Qatar needed 156, and Shahzeb Afridi decided it wasn't worth taking long over. He made 85 off 35 balls with nine sixes, and the openers had 130 on the board by the 11th over. Qatar won by 9 wickets with 211 balls remaining.

For more than 14 overs Qatar's bowlers had nothing to show. What changed was the persistence of Owais Ahmed and Asim. Owais had Ura caught by Ikramullah Khan at 86, Asim had Bau caught by Mujeeb-ur-Rehman two balls later at 91, and the innings began to come apart. Asim bowled ten overs for 34 with three maidens and took five of the nine wickets that fell after Ura's, Owais finished with 3 for 30 from his ten, and Ikramullah cleaned up the last two for 12. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman held three catches.
Then the chase. Afridi hit five fours and nine sixes, which is 74 of his 85 runs in boundaries. Zubair Ali, at the other end, was hardly slow himself, with 58 not out off 44 including nine fours. By the time Afridi was caught off Kabua Morea in the 11th over, Qatar needed 26. Zubair and Imal Liyanage took four more overs to get them.
It is worth being fair to PNG's openers. Tony Ura made 52 off 44 with three sixes, and the 86-run stand with Bau was exactly what a side batting first wants. The trouble came after. From 86 for 0, PNG lost seven wickets for 46 runs in under 15 overs, and only Ura and Bau passed 20. The extras, at 21, were the third-highest contribution to the total.
Kabua Morea did what he could at the end, hitting two sixes in 16 not out, and took the only Qatar wicket with the ball. But 155 against a Qatar top order this aggressive was always going to be short, and so it proved: PNG's bowlers had 14.5 overs to defend it and conceded more than ten an over.
The two innings were played on what looked like two different pitches, but it was the same Gymkhana surface. That says more about how PNG batted after the openers fell than about the conditions. Qatar's bowlers won through accuracy: Asim's three maidens and Owais's economy rate of three an over meant PNG's middle order could neither score freely nor get settled. The pitch offered nothing to stop Afridi, but then very few pitches would have.
Afridi will get the highlight reels, but the award went to the man who made the chase small. Asim's 10-3-34-5 included Bau, Lega Siaka and Assad Vala, all caught, plus Boio Ray lbw and Alei Nao caught. He broke through at 91, with PNG still in control, and kept coming back until the innings was over. Bowling figures like these are a quiet kind of brilliance: no fireworks, just the same good ball, over and over, until the batters ran out of answers.

Qatar's opening pair is a weapon few sides in this group can match, and Asim and Owais give them a bowling attack that can turn a match in the middle overs. For PNG, the question is about the middle order. A side that starts 86 for 0 should not be bowled out for 155, and the next match will show whether the batters between three and eight can turn starts into totals.
