Ninety-Two From Usmani, Then 105 in the Last Ten — UAE Build in Two Gears and Bowl Qatar Out With Seven Different Wicket-Takers

The most revealing over of this match was the 47.5th, when Sohaib Khan holed out to Zeeshan Haider having made 41 from 38 balls. UAE were 234 for 7. Ten overs earlier they had been 158 for 5 and looked like a side heading for 220 on a decent surface — a total Qatar's five debutants might have found within reach, and the sort of score that makes an associate group game genuinely competitive.

Instead they finished on 263 for 9, and the difference — 105 runs from the last ten overs — was the difference between a match and a demonstration. Qatar, to their considerable credit, got to 140 for 4 in the thirty-first over of the reply and were still, technically, in it. Then they lost six wickets for 31 and the technicality expired.

Adeeb Usmani came to the crease in the fourth over with UAE 10 for 1 and left in the 41st with the score 162 for 6. In between he watched four partners depart for 33 runs between them, played through a period where UAE scored 98 in the first 24 overs, and finished on 92 from 106 balls with four sixes — every one of them struck when the alternative was letting the innings die.

It was not a fluent innings and it did not need to be. His fifth-wicket stand of 60 with Akshdeep Nath occupied thirteen overs and did the unglamorous work of ensuring UAE had wickets in hand at the point where the field spread. He fell eight short of a hundred, caught off Owais Ahmed, and a lesser side would have subsided from there.

Instead Sohaib Khan and Aayan Afzal Khan produced the passage that decided the match: 72 runs from 43 balls for the seventh wicket, Aayan striking at 170 with three sixes off 24 deliveries. Khuzaima Tanveer then hit two sixes in an unbeaten 18 from eight. UAE's last ten overs yielded 105; their first forty had yielded 158. Bayuemas Oval had not changed. UAE's intent had.

Qatar handed List A debuts to five players in this match — Zubair Ali, Zeeshan Haider, Akshay Shankar, Shahzeb Afridi and captain Mirza Mohammed Baig — which is context that ought to travel with the scoreline. A side introducing half a top order to fifty-over cricket against UAE is not being measured on the same scale as UAE.

By that measure the reply had genuine merit. Zubair Ali made 47 from 70 on debut and put on 62 for the second wicket with Imal Liyanage, whose 70 from 82 with nine fours was the best innings of the match by a Qatar player and, for a while, a real one. At 140 for 4 in the 31st over the required rate was around 11 — steep, but Liyanage was set.

What followed was a collapse of the particular kind that afflicts inexperienced middle orders chasing a big total: Mujeeb-ur-Rehman run out, Shahzeb Afridi bowled by a part-timer, Daniel Louis caught and bowled, Owais Ahmed lbw for a duck. Six wickets for 31, four of them to bowlers who were not UAE's frontline attack. Liyanage was last out, bowled by Akshdeep Nath, having watched the innings dissolve from the other end. The lesson is not about technique — it is that when the rate climbs past ten, a young order needs a designated finisher and Qatar did not have one.

Bayuemas Oval played true. There was some early movement — Aryansh Sharma bowled by Ikramullah Khan in the fourth over, and Ikramullah's three-over spell went for ten — but by the twentieth over the ball had stopped doing anything and the pitch became a surface on which 300 was available to a side willing to take the risk.

The clearest evidence is the contrast in UAE's own innings: 5.26 an over overall, but 10.5 an over in the last ten. Qatar's captain Mirza Mohammed Baig took three wickets but conceded 62 from nine, and Mujeeb-ur-Rehman went for 60 from nine — both figures earned entirely at the death. Qatar's discipline in the first forty overs was excellent; they simply had no answer once the field went back.

Ninety-two from 106 is, on its face, an unremarkable strike rate in modern fifty-over cricket. Read it against the innings around it and it becomes something else: Usmani faced more than a fifth of UAE's deliveries and scored more than a third of their runs, while wickets fell at 10, 57, 60, 98 and 158.

He is a wicketkeeper-batter who had already committed to a long day in the field, and he batted through the two phases that decide fifty-over matches — the collapse and the consolidation — before handing the acceleration to players fresher than him. The four sixes came in the middle overs, all of them off spin, all of them down the ground. He did not reach three figures and it did not matter; the innings had already done its work by the time he was caught at deep midwicket.

Group B has UAE and Oman on two points, Qatar and Singapore on zero, Kuwait yet to play. Both of the first two results were heavy — Oman by 131, UAE by 92 — which means when those sides meet, net run rate will already be a poor tiebreaker and the head-to-head will effectively decide qualification.

Watch Aayan Afzal Khan's role. He batted at eight and made 41 from 24, then bowled seven overs for 24 and a wicket; a player that useful in both disciplines being used that far down the order suggests UAE have more batting than they know what to do with, or that they have not yet worked out their best XI. And watch Qatar's Imal Liyanage — 70 from 82 in a losing cause against the strongest side in the group is the kind of innings that earns a batter the next three games regardless of results.
