James Vince Ends Rotterdam's Season: The Team With Two Wins All Year Knocks the Dockers Out of the Playoffs

Every league has one of these matches, and nobody ever sees it coming. Dublin Guardians arrived at Malahide on Thursday evening with two wins from ten, a place at the bottom of the European T20 Premier League table alongside Glasgow Cosmic, and nothing left to play for. Rotterdam Dockers arrived needing to win to top the table and go straight to the final.

The Dockers made 188 for 5. It was not enough. James Vince made 106 not out from 61 balls, Dublin won by five wickets with six balls to spare, and Rotterdam's season ended on the spot — fourth of six, level on points with the three teams above them, separated only by net run rate.

Had they won, they would have finished first. That is the arithmetic the Dockers will be living with.

Rotterdam's innings was slow to start and then violent, which is what happens when Heinrich Klaasen is batting. They were 54 for 3 in 6.5 overs, with Colin Munro gone for a 20 that lasted eight balls and Michael Levitt and Shubham Ranjane both dismissed cheaply. Peter Hatzoglou, the leg-spinner, bowled four overs for 20 in the middle and kept the brakes on.

Faf du Plessis made 42 from 37 and did the anchoring, and then Klaasen took over. Nine fours and four sixes from 41 deliveries, unbeaten at the end. The last 29 balls of the innings brought 64 runs — from 124 for 4 in the sixteenth over to 188 for 5.

On a ground where 190 had just been enough in the earlier fixture, and with the Dockers having beaten Belfast Wolves and Glasgow Cosmic earlier this month, 188 for 5 looked like a winning total and a first-place finish.

David Willey was out for 0 off the fifth ball of the chase. From there James Vince and Harry Tector put on 100 in just over eight overs, and the tone of the evening changed completely.

Vince has spent a long career being among the most aesthetically pleasing batters in English cricket and never quite the most reliable one. This was both. Ten fours, five sixes, 106 from 61 balls, unbeaten when the winning runs came — and crucially, he was still there in the nineteenth over, which is the part of Vince innings that has historically gone missing.

He was helped by an extras column of 17 and by Anrich Nortje's four overs going for 54. Rotterdam's other bowlers were excellent: Shubham Ranjane 2 for 28, David Wiese 2 for 32, Roelof van der Merwe 1 for 35. But a T20 attack cannot carry a set of figures like Nortje's when the target is 189, and the Dockers ran out of overs from which to hide him.

Sanjay Krishnamurthi's 24 from 17 in the middle overs and George Dockrell's six to finish were the supporting details. Dublin got there in exactly nineteen overs, in a match that meant nothing to them and everything to the other side.

Malahide hosted both of the day's ETPL fixtures, and the second was clearly the better batting proposition — or, at least, the drier one. Two 188-plus first-innings totals in a day at a ground with short square boundaries is not a surprise, but the fact that this one was chased down in nineteen overs, while the earlier chase fell short, comes down to the weather as much as the pitch.

Hatzoglou's 4-0-20-1 was the standout bowling performance of the evening on either side. Wrist-spin on a true Irish September surface, gripping just enough to make hitting straight a gamble, has been one of this tournament's recurring features.

Instead, an evening in which Klaasen produced one of the innings of the tournament ends with them watching the playoffs. That is T20 cricket's particular cruelty — the same format that lets a last-placed side ambush a title contender also refuses to grade on effort.

For Dublin Guardians, a season of two wins ends with a third, and with James Vince's hundred as the thing people will remember about their campaign. It is not a consolation prize that shows up in the table. It was, on the night, the best innings on the ground.
