Robinson Obuya Bats Through and Rwanda's Tournament Ends: Uganda Win by 72 in Kigali

Carrying your bat through a T20 innings is a strange achievement. It usually means your team collapsed around you. On Thursday at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, Robinson Obuya managed it while his side lost only two wickets — he opened, he faced 70 of the 120 deliveries, and he was still there at the end with 118 next to his name.

Uganda made 188 for 2. Rwanda, in reply, lost five wickets for 25 runs inside six overs and never found a way back. Uganda won by 72 runs, moved to twelve points from seven matches, and confirmed their place at the business end of the Africa Continent Cup. Rwanda have now played all eight of their league fixtures and finish on eight points.

Uganda chose to bat and Obuya simply took the day. The shape of his innings is instructive: eight fours and eight sixes across 70 balls, which means 80 of his 118 came in boundaries and the remaining 38 came in ones and twos. That is a genuinely balanced T20 hundred, not a slog — the strike was rotated, the bad ball was punished, and nobody at the other end ever had to take a risk.

Anas Baig made 19 from 18 in an opening stand of 88. Charles Musemez contributed 9 from 13. Then Olipa Gerald arrived and hit 35 not out from 19 with three sixes, and the last 34 balls produced 63 runs in an unbroken third-wicket stand.

Rwanda's bowling was not bad. Muhammad Nadir went for 19 from four overs, which on a day when 188 was scored is a fine piece of work. Emile Rukiriza and Ignace Ntirenganya both kept their economy under nine. The problem was that Obuya never gave them a wicket, and a T20 attack without wickets is just a delivery mechanism.

Rwanda's chase was over before the field spread. Didier Ndikubwimana went in the first over. Hamza Khan and Daniel Gumyusenge fell within two deliveries of each other. Yves Cyusa and David Uwimana followed. Twenty-five for five in 5.4 overs, with a target of 189.

Juma Miyagi did the early damage — three overs, eight runs, two wickets — and Joseph Baguma (4-1-22-3) and Cosmas Kyewuta (4-0-32-3) worked through the rest. Uganda's six bowlers between them conceded 112 and took nine wickets. The 18 extras were the third-highest contribution to Rwanda's innings.

The highest was Isae Niyomugabo, who made 52 not out from 52 and batted through from the top order to the twentieth over. In a chase that was lost inside six overs, a fifty at a strike rate of 100 is not a statement of intent — it is a refusal to give the innings away, which on a night like this was the only thing left to play for. Muhammad Nadir's 19 from 11 at the end was the only other passage of genuine resistance.

Gahanga has been a good batting ground all tournament and was again — 188 for 2 tells you the ball came on nicely and the bounce was consistent. What the pitch offered the bowlers was early movement with the new ball, and Uganda used it far better than Rwanda did.

The difference between the two innings was not conditions. It was that Uganda's openers survived the first six overs and Rwanda's top five did not.

Uganda have six wins from seven and sit second on twelve points, behind Kenya, who have won all seven of theirs. The two meet on Friday in the last league fixture of the tournament for either side — and with Rwanda's campaign complete on eight points, nobody below them can catch either side. Friday, in other words, is about seeding and pride rather than survival.

Rwanda end their league programme with four wins from eight. As hosts they have been competitive rather than dominant: capable of beating Sierra Leone and Botswana comfortably, and of losing to Kenya and Uganda by margins that suggest the gap to the top two is real. Obuya's 118 not out was made on their ground, and it is the kind of innings that will be quoted back at them for a while.
