Tahir Wants to Say Goodbye at 48 — But He's Still the Best Spinner in the Caribbean
Imran Tahir finished CPL 2026 as joint-leading wicket-taker, surpassed Sunil Narine on the all-time charts, became the first overseas player to play 100 CPL games — and then told a press conference in Georgetown he wants one more year. At 48. Because he hasn't said goodbye to the Guyanese crowd yet.
The Numbers Don't Make Sense — And That's the Point
At some point, cricket is supposed to outgrow you. Your fingers lose their snap, your body stops cooperating with what your brain is telling it, and younger, hungrier versions of you start filling the team sheets. That's how it works for everyone. Everyone except Imran Tahir.
CPL 2026 is over. The 47-year-old South African leg-spinner finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament — 16 scalps, level with Hunain Shah, Alzarri Joseph, and Matthew Forde. Men half his age. During this same tournament, he became the first overseas player to play 100 CPL games. He overtook Sunil Narine — the greatest T20 mystery spinner of a generation — to become the all-time leading wicket-taker in CPL history with 146 wickets from 102 matches. He took 5/17 against the St Lucia Kings, the best T20 figures of his 20-year career, making him the oldest player ever to claim a five-wicket haul in T20 cricket.
And then, at a press conference in Georgetown after the season ended, Tahir said he wants to come back next year. At 48.
I'm very keen to come back and play because I feel this is my home. I get a lot of love when I come here. I'm looking to finish my career in front of the Guyanese crowd.Imran Tahir, post-season press conference, Georgetown
146 and Counting
Tahir's CPL record is absurd by any standard. He arrived in the Caribbean in 2018, joining the Guyana Amazon Warriors as a veteran leg-spinner with a good international record and an even better celebration. Eight seasons later, he's become the tournament's greatest-ever bowler — statistically speaking. Narine held the all-time wicket record for years, a product of his decade-long dominance at Trinbago Knight Riders. Tahir passed him during CPL 2026 and now sits alone at the top of the charts.
He has captained Amazon Warriors since 2023. In that time, he led them to a CPL title in 2023, back-to-back finals in 2024 and 2025, and a Qualifier 2 finish this year, where they lost to eventual runners-up Jamaica Kingsmen. He also led the franchise to their maiden Global Super League title earlier this year, beating San Francisco Unicorns, Desert Vipers, Lahore Qalandars, and Perth Scorchers — franchises backed by MLC, ILT20, PSL, and BBL money respectively.
What Tahir has built at Amazon Warriors isn't just a playing career. It's a dynasty.

The Ice Cream Problem
The most revealing part of Tahir's press conference wasn't the stats or the farewell talk. It was the ice cream.
"I get motivated to come here and play my cricket, trying to get fit, eat well," Tahir said. "It is not easy because if someone is eating ice cream and I'm in front of them, it's very difficult to control yourself. But that's what you have to do if you want to play for another year and another year."
There's something wonderfully honest about a 47-year-old international cricketer who has taken nearly 600 T20 wickets framing his longevity not in terms of training regimes or recovery protocols, but in terms of not eating ice cream. This is a man who understands what the fight actually is at his age. It's not about outsmarting batters — he can still do that better than almost anyone. It's about convincing his body to keep doing it one more time.
There will be questions about me, and I'm the kind a guy that like challenges and stuff. For me, my part is to give my role not as a captain, but as a player towards the team.Imran Tahir on his future
Why the Goodbye Matters
Tahir was careful to note that the decision isn't entirely his. "I leave it with the management, I leave it with the team owner and the president, they have to decide where my future will be," he said. That's a man who knows the franchise might want to move on. That's also a man who finished as their leading wicket-taker, led them to a cross-franchise title, and is their most successful captain in history. Good luck telling him no.
The bigger picture is what Tahir represents. He is 11 wickets away from becoming the fourth player in history to take 600 T20 wickets, behind Rashid Khan (736), Sunil Narine (657), and Dwayne Bravo (631). If he plays CPL 2027, that milestone is a near-certainty. He would reach it at 48, in a format where most spinners peak in their late twenties.
Cricket doesn't owe Tahir a farewell season. But after 102 CPL games, 146 wickets, a world record five-for, a title, two finals, and a cross-franchise championship, if the man says he wants to walk off in Providence and say thank you to the crowd that adopted him — you give him the season. You don't even think about it.
