Hetmyer Made 111 From 43 Balls and Trinbago Still Nearly Chased It — Guyana Win by 9 Runs at the Oval

Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss at the Queen's Park Oval and bowled. It is what you do here — the surface grips, the ball holds, and Sunil Narine and Akeal Hosein have spent a decade making the middle overs of this ground the least pleasant place in Caribbean cricket to be a batter. Four balls later Glenn Phillips was caught by Dominic Drakes off Hosein for a four-ball duck and Guyana were nought for one. By the fourth over they were 19 for 2, Shai Hope caught behind square off Lahiru Kumara.

Then it rained. Play stopped at 22 for 2 in the 4.3rd over, and when it resumed the match had been cut to sixteen overs a side. That is the moment the game changed, and not in the way Trinbago would have wanted: a shortened chase means a shortened defence, and the man at the crease when the covers came off was Shimron Hetmyer.

What followed was the most destructive innings of CPL 2026 and one of the more destructive in the tournament's history. Hetmyer reached fifty from 27 balls with four fours and four sixes. He reached a hundred from 40 balls. He finished unbeaten on 111 from 43 — eight fours, nine sixes, a strike rate of 258 — and he did it having come in with his side two down inside four overs on a pitch that had just had rain on it.

Romario Shepherd, who arrived at 140 for 5 in the fourteenth, made 27 from seven balls with two fours and three sixes. Guyana's last twenty-four deliveries produced 85 runs. They finished on 185 for 5 from their sixteen, and the DLS revision set Trinbago 182.

The temptation with an innings like this is to describe it as an assault, which undersells the construction. Hetmyer came in at 19 for 2 with the rain about to arrive and, in the passage either side of the interruption, batted almost conservatively: Guyana were 50 in 7.2 overs, which in a sixteen-over game is a run rate that gets you to about 110. Matthew Nandu was retired out at 13 from 21 in the ninth over — a decision that tells you exactly how Guyana were reading the situation. They had one batter going and they wanted him to face everything.

From there Hetmyer went from 50 off 27 to 100 off 40. Thirteen balls, fifty runs. Lahiru Kumara's three overs for 55 is the number that decided this match — Trinbago's fourth seamer being asked to bowl at Hetmyer in a shortened game with the field up. Dominic Drakes's two overs went for 40. Between them, those two bowled five of Trinbago's sixteen overs and conceded 95.

The other eleven overs — Narine, Hosein, Usman Tariq, plus the part-timers — cost 90 for four wickets. Trinbago's spin, in other words, did its job. Narine's four overs for 25 on a night when 185 was scored is a genuinely excellent piece of bowling. The seam around it was not close to good enough, and in a sixteen-over match there is no room to hide a bowler.

Needing 182 from sixteen, Trinbago did not attempt to play themselves in, and they were right not to. Colin Munro and Sunil Narine opened, Narine went in the third over, and by the end of the shortened powerplay Trinbago were 52 for 1 — ahead of where Guyana had been at the same stage.

Then Mohammad Nabi happened. Nicholas Pooran, who had made 43 from 16 balls with four sixes and looked like the one man in the ground capable of matching Hetmyer, holed out to Quentin Sampson off Nabi in the seventh over. Three balls later Jyd Goolie was lbw to the same bowler for a three-ball duck. Munro had already gone, also to Nabi. Trinbago went from 52 for 1 to 68 for 5 in fifteen deliveries, and Nabi's three overs for 20 in the middle of a run-fest is the second-best bowling performance of the night after Narine's.

What happened next is why this game will be remembered as a contest rather than a procession. Alex Hales, on 1 from 7 balls at the strategic timeout with his side 68 for 5, finished with 55 from 24 balls — seven sixes, one four, almost all of it after that timeout. He put on 43 with Akeal Hosein and dragged the required rate from impossible back to plausible. When Shamar Joseph bowled him at 150 for 7 in the fifteenth over, Trinbago needed 32 from eight balls with two recognised batters gone.

Drakes and Joshua Da Silva got 22 of them. Nine short.

Guyana made 185 from sixteen overs. Trinbago's target was 182. The three-run reduction reflects the fact that Trinbago knew their allocation from the start of their innings while Guyana lost overs mid-innings having planned for twenty — the standard DLS adjustment, and a small one.

It is worth stating plainly because the margin was nine runs and someone will do the arithmetic: Trinbago would have lost by twelve runs chasing 186 off sixteen. DLS did not decide this match. Three overs of seam bowling at Shimron Hetmyer decided this match.

Guyana Amazon Warriors go second on the CPL 2026 table and have now won every one of their four completed matches. Imran Tahir's captaincy in the sixteen-over format was sensible rather than inspired — he bowled his own four overs for 38 and used Nabi in the exact window where Trinbago had to accelerate — but the story of their campaign is that they have found a middle order that scores at a rate nobody else in this tournament is matching. Hetmyer's 111 not out was the highest individual score of CPL 2026; Shepherd's seven-ball 27 was the kind of finishing cameo that turns a good total into an unchaseable one.

Trinbago sit fifth, at home, in a season where home was supposed to be the correction. They have now lost three of their four matches at the Queen's Park Oval. Their batting is not the problem — Pooran at 268 and Hales at 229 in the same innings is a top order functioning exactly as designed. The problem is that Narine and Hosein bowl six overs between them and the other fourteen have to come from somewhere, and against a top-order batter in form, that somewhere has been costing them the tournament.

The Knight Riders play Antigua & Barbuda Falcons at the Oval on Wednesday. The Falcons have already beaten them once this season, chasing 166 with nine balls to spare.

Our preview of this fixture had the wrong opponent listed for Trinbago — a scheduling error on our side, and we would rather say so than quietly correct it. What that preview got right was the substance: that TKR's death bowling, and specifically the overs not bowled by Narine and Hosein, was the vulnerability most likely to decide their home stretch. Lahiru Kumara's 3-0-55-1 and Dominic Drakes's 2-0-40-0 are that argument in its most expensive form.

What nobody had was Hetmyer. On a rain-shortened night at a ground that has historically rewarded spin and punished exactly his kind of batting, he made the highest individual score of CPL 2026 and did it from a position of 19 for 2. That is the tournament doing what it does.
