Four Wickets, Then the Finish: Nyasha Gwanzura Carries Zimbabwe Women to a Series-Levelling Win in Harare

West Indies Women chose to bat and were 56 for 1, then lost six wickets for 32. Nyasha Gwanzura's 4 for 33 and five catches from keeper Modester Mupachikwa bowled them out for 139. Zimbabwe Women's chase wobbled from 67 without loss to 105 for 5, and Gwanzura walked out to finish it — 18 not out from 37 balls, and a four-wicket win with 55 balls to spare.

Three days after losing the first ODI by 99 runs, Zimbabwe Women came back to Harare Sports Club and turned the series around with the ball. West Indies Women chose to bat, reached 56 for 1 in the 12th over with Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor looking settled, and then came apart. By the time the innings ended in the 40th over, they had 139, and Zimbabwe Women had a target that asked for patience rather than heroics.

West Indies Women 139 all out. Zimbabwe Women 140 for 6 in 40.5 overs. The chase had its own anxious passage — three wickets for three runs after a 67-run opening stand, and later 105 for 5 — but Nyasha Gwanzura, who had already taken 4 for 33, was there at the end with 18 not out. A four-wicket win with 55 balls to spare, and the series is level at 1-1 with one match to play.

Zimbabwe Women: Squeeze, Then Hold Your Nerve

The bowling performance was built on a collective refusal to give anything away. Francisca Chipare's six overs for 16 and Olinder Chare's 6.3 overs for 12 were the kind of spells that do not make headlines but make everything else possible. Gwanzura took the big wicket — Matthews, caught behind at 56 in the 12th over — and then came back to remove Jannillea Glasgow, Zaida James and Aaliyah Alleyne as the middle order folded.

Behind the stumps, Modester Mupachikwa had a day to remember: five catches, including Matthews, Taylor and Realeanna Grimmond. Then she opened the batting and made 38 from 57 balls with seven fours, sharing a 67-run stand with Kelis Ndhlovu that took most of the pressure out of the chase.

The wobble, when it came, was sharp. Mupachikwa fell lbw to Alleyne at 67, and within three runs Ndhlovu and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano were gone too. Josephine Nkomo steadied things with 30 from 58, but at 105 for 5 in the 31st over, with 35 still needed, a side that had already lost the first match could have tightened up. Gwanzura and Nkomo added 28, and when Nkomo fell at 133, Gwanzura and Michelle Mavunga knocked off the last seven.

West Indies Women: A Good Start Undone in Twenty Overs

For eleven overs, West Indies Women were on course. Grimmond went early at 9, but Matthews hit five fours in her 26 and Taylor settled in beside her; the pair added 47 from 59 balls. When Matthews fell at 56, though, the innings lost its shape. Shemaine Campbelle made 3, Chinelle Henry fell second ball for a duck, Glasgow made 1 and James 3, and from 56 for 1 the visitors were 88 for 7. At 17 overs they were 67 for 4.

Taylor held on for 47 from 68 balls, but when she was caught behind off Mavunga at 101 in the 28th over, the remaining question was simply how far the tail could take it. Ashmini Munisar's unbeaten 20 from 45 and a last-wicket stand of 26 with Karishma Ramharack lifted them from 113 for 9 to 139 — valuable, but still well short of a total that would test a home side on their own ground.

The bowlers did what they could. Munisar's 7-1-15-2, Alleyne's 2 for 27 and Afy Fletcher's 2 for 37 kept Zimbabwe Women honest, and the burst of three wickets for three runs after the opening stand gave West Indies Women a genuine opening. But defending 139, they needed to take wickets in clusters more than once, and they took only one more wicket after the 31st over.

What the Numbers Say About the Surface

Neither side scored quickly. West Indies Women managed 3.5 an over, Zimbabwe Women 3.4, and no batter who faced more than 20 balls scored at a run a ball — Matthews' 26 from 35 was the quickest of them. That points to a surface where runs had to be worked for rather than one that rewarded hitting through the line.

It also rewarded bowlers who hit a length and waited. The economy rates tell the story: Chare 1.85, Munisar 2.14, Chipare 2.67, Gwanzura 3.30. Wickets came in clusters on both sides — six for 32 in the West Indies innings, three for three in Zimbabwe's — which suggests that once a batter was new at the crease, scoring was harder still.

Standout: Nyasha Gwanzura

Player of the Match awards often go to the person with the biggest number. Gwanzura's went to the person who did the most jobs. Ten overs, four wickets for 33, including the one that mattered most — Matthews, the one West Indies batter who had found her timing. Then, with the chase at 105 for 5 and the memory of a 99-run defeat still fresh, she batted 37 balls for 18 not out, hit three fours, and made sure the game did not slip away.

There was nothing flamboyant about it. It was the innings of someone who understood that the target was small enough to be reached by staying in, and the spell of someone who knew that on this pitch, patience would be paid back. Some players win matches in a moment; Gwanzura won this one across two innings, a little at a time.

CricIntel Prediction Review

We did not publish a preview for the 2nd ODI, so there is no prediction to grade for this match. We will simply note that after a 99-run defeat in the first game, few would have backed Zimbabwe Women to bowl West Indies Women out for 139 three days later — and that is exactly what they did.

What's Next

The series is level at 1-1, and the decider is back at Harare Sports Club on September 30. Zimbabwe Women go into it with a template: bowl tight, trust the keeper, and chase with patience. The question is whether the batting can hold up against a larger target, since this chase still lost six wickets for 140.

West Indies Women need their middle order to show up. Taylor's 47 was the only innings above 26 in their total, and losing six wickets for 32 is the sort of passage that decides series. Get through the middle overs with wickets in hand, and their stronger batters have time to do what they did in the first ODI.
